Cricket news - Live Cricket Score - CSK vs KXIP, Match 18, IPL 2019
CSK win by 22 runs
The final push never came for KXIP. To have a century partnership and lose just five wickets and lose by 22 runs is pretty shocking to be honest. Excellent defensive skills from CSK at the death. Change of pace and back of a length worked wonders after that effort through the middle from the spinners, who bowled 12 overs for 61 runs and 2 wickets.
So CSK are 4 from 5 and sitting comfortably on 8 points. Half way there. KXIP have some introspection to do. We are live with the next game where Alzarri Joseph is making his IPL debut with MI and Yuvraj Singh has been dropped. Switch tabs to catch that action. Until next, time, it's a good bye!

Two waist-high full tosses
But Chahar is allowed to bowl because they were not dangerous. Two slower balls slipped out of his hand. Pressure?
What a terrific comeback from him. He conceded 9 off the first legal ball. Gives away only 4 and knocks over Miller. 26 to win off the final over.
Rahul falls for 55 off 47
A strange end to his innings. Lost all rhythm and got undone by a slower ball short one from Kuggeleijn. Can Miller and Sarfaraz see this home. It's gotten tough now. 39 off 12 needed.
Fifties for both Rahul and Sarfaraz; 100 partnership
Terrific batting from the two. They are seeing off the spinners. Just the last Tahir over to go. 51 off 24.
The bails don't budge for Dhoni
A big moment in the game as KL Rahul survives because of a bail's insistence to stay put. Rahul works a ball to the leg and sets off. Dhoni is quick off the blocks so when Rahul is trying to get back, he is in trouble. Dhoni does a no-look flick and hits the stumps to catch Rahul short. Unfortunately the bail doesn't fall and Rahul survives.
Kuggeleijn having a bad start
It's not Varun Chakravarthy bad he hasn't inspired any confidence that he can do a job in the absence of Ngidi and Bravo. Sarfaraz has possibly played the shot of the game off him. Takes a length ball and launches him over long-off. This after a scoop over Dhoni for four. Chepauk has been hushed.
Rahul, Sarfaraz steady KXIP
An excellent recovery this from these two Indian batsmen. It's crucial because they'll easily have the best chance against this barrage of spin that Dhoni will unleash on them. Required run-rate still only at 9.
Dhoni Review System faults?
Imran Tahir traps Sarfaraz Khan with a googly. He wants a review but Dhoni believes it would miss and they opt against it. Replays show the ball would have crashed into the leg stump. So a missed chance. Sarfaraz was on 16.
First sight of Kuggeleijn
Sarfaraz Khan welcomes with a six over backward point. Kuggeleijn has a quick arm action and is bowling around 140kph, but he is a little too full for this pitch. He goes for 11 and KXIP finish the Powerplay with 46/2 on the board.
Jadeja and Tahir will come on now.
KL Rahul gets a move on
Finally Deepak Chahar being taken on. It was about time. Suryakumar Yadav did it in the last match and now KL Rahul has hit him for a six and two fours. KXIP 35 after 5 overs.
Harbhajan is an underrated IPL player. Hes been consistently brilliant in the the league for a decade. He combines beautiful flight and dip with occasional flatter and faster trajectories. When the pitch takes turn he gets great bite and fizz. Hes a joy to watch. #IPL #CSKvKXIP— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 6, 2019
A double-wicket maiden to start for Harbhajan
Oh dear, KXIP. The old trick of bowling off-spin to Gayle works once more. The big nicks off and Dhoni holds on to a sharp catch. The next wicket is a shocker. Mayank Agarwal play one dot ball and then sees it fit to charge and loft. Doesn't get to the pitch of the ball and holes out to long on.
11 for 2 after 3 overs
Harbhajan vs Gayle (T20s):
Dhoni flourish takes CSK to 160
44 from the final 3 overs for CSK. Sam Curran, after 3 good overs, bowls a 19-run final over. Too many length balls. Dhoni finishes unbeaten on 37 off 23. CSK are playing an extra spinner and two other part-time options. Will they fancy their chances here?
@kaushik_cb Scott kuggelejin could be a real surprise factor for CSK. #Cricbuzz #CSKvsKXIP— Inquilab Hussain (@Inquilab7374) April 6, 2019
Spin: 8-0-46-3 (ER 5.75)
Pace: 12-0-114-0 (ER 9.50)
KXIP bowling very good overs
The pitch is slowing down but AJ Tye has bowled four consecutive dots and given away just two from his over to Dhoni. Sam Curran has been excellent with his wide yorkers. Unlikely CSK will get to 160 now. But 150 is a possibility.
Double strike for Ashwin; Faf and Raina fall
The local boy visiting captain brings KXIP back into this innings. He removes Du Plessis and Raina off successive deliveries. Faf finally miscues one of his lofted shots on this turning track, it was bound to happen, and he is caught at long-on. An excellent innings otherwise: 54 off 38!
Raina blunders next ball looking to slog sweep and is castled. Bad mistake when a wicket had just fallen.
Ashwin finishes with figures of 4-0-23-3
Two new batsmen at the crease. Dhoni and Rayudu!
@kaushik_cb Scoring a fifty coming directly from the bench...it shows the strength of this experienced team @ChennaiIPL. #CSKvKXIP— Mohit Sharma (@MOHIT_BUCHOLI) April 6, 2019
Faf holds fort at one end
Excellent play against spin from the South African skipper so far. Picks a carrom ball from Ashwin and most importantly, goes straight with his lofted hit. Ball lands on the sightscreen.
Faf gets to a 33-ball half-century (a terrific effort on a slow pitch) with a slog sweep off M. Ashwin. Superb timing on that. It's the only boundary he's conceded in this spell. Finishes with figures of 0-23!
Ashwin showing variety in bowling action
He's bowled a Kedar Jadhav style slinger and a seam-up almost like Shami. Interesting
Interesting comment about Ashwin captaincy. 'He loves the analytics side of the game, but he tends to forget them when he is captaining largely due to fact that he is captain and has so many things on his mind' #IPL2019 #CSKvKXIP— Gav Joshi (@Gampa_cricket) April 6, 2019
Ashwins work in unison, get Watson
R Ashwin gets the wicket of Watson but it is really Murugan that does the setup. A terrific first over where he got grip, turn and bounce and kept the two batsmen down to 1 run.
Watson tries to break free in R Ashwin's next over. Plays the slog sweep and top-edges it to deep mid-wicket. Chepauk's prodigal roars in celebration.
A poor start for AJ Tye
18 runs off his opening over and this is some very smart batting. Both players are playing straight on this wicket. A six over long-off for Watson and over long-on for Du Plessis.
Curran bowls a good sixth over but CSK still have 54 in the PowerPlay.
CSK's opening stands in IPL 2019 before today: 8, 21, 1, 1
A Faf clinic against Shami
16 runs off the third over and Faf du Plessis shows off his range. He walks out and straight bats a four past mid-off, creams a cover drive and then scoops a length ball over fine-leg for six.
Just the one over for Ashwin. Here's Sam Curran, the hat-trick hero.
Turn for Ashwin
He gets hit for a four off a rank length, but the highlight of the over is a big spinning carrom ball that squares Watson up. Dhoni will be impressed by that, he can even bowl 20 overs of spin today!
A new opening combination for CSK. Watson and Faf du Plessis walk out. Mohammed Shami gets the ball. First impressions, it is a little slow. Expectedly, Ashwin starts from the other end.
Some interesting quotes from the captains at the toss
Ashwin: It's quite emotional to be honest. I am very happy to be back playing here in Chennai
Dhoni: The wicket looks nice to bat on initially. The groundsmen have done a good job.
Interestingly, CSK are playing an extra spinner and Faf should open while KXIP have left out one spinner for Tye. Shoring up their death bowling?! What do you make of these tactical moves. Tweet to me @kaushik_cb
CSK make three changes and bat
They're not used to making so many changes but can't say we didn't see this coming. Scott Kuggeleijn, Faf du Plessis and Harbhajan come in while Shardul Thakur, Mohit Sharma and the injured Bravo are out.
@kaushik_cb Every season Faf has had to sit out initially but he performs as soon as he is drafted into the XI. High hopes from him. #CSKvKXIP— Pratham Sharma (@Pratham_KS) April 6, 2019
KXIP have two changes themselves. Gayle and Andrew Tye come in with Hardus Viljoen and Mujeeb Ur Rahman going out.
Chris Gayle should return
So will KXIP keep Gayle and Curran as openers and move KL Rahul to 3? What about CSK meanwhile... Rayudu-Watson opening combo isn't working this season. This will be a dry pitch so expect a lot of spin play.
Toss coming up!
Prelude - Return of the prodigal son
An IPL homecoming for R Ashwin, the star from West Mambalam, Chennai. He hasn't played at Chepauk against CSK since he was not retained by his home franchise.
He has always wanted to take a leadership role and will be eager to put his cricketing smarts into play at a venue he has so many great memories. Take his IPL record for instance. He has 43 wickets from 36 games at an economy of 6.
Where will the CSK fans' loyalty lie? It's a tricky period for them in this tournament. They have just the 1 loss so far but have gaping holes to address with their death bowling following the loss of Bravo to injury.
