And he gets it
What a performance! Alzarri Joseph has replaced Malinga to pick up a six-fer on IPL debut. These are the best figures for any bowler on debut in the IPL. MI have successfully defended 136. Apart from Alzarri, credit should go to Pollard. In the end, he was the only batsman to put up a fight on this tough surface. MI's campaign is back on track after two crucial wins now against CSK and SRH.
What a debut! He knocks the stumps of another batsman. This time, it's Bhuvneshwar Kumar. And Alzarri Joseph has a five-fer to his name. What an inclusion. What a replacement! What a debut! Can he get number six? MI are one wicket away from a famous win.
Four for Alzarri
Wow!! Alzarri's pace is too much to handle for SRH. Rashid now pulls and gets a top edge only for Alzarri to run in and complete the catch. They have lost number seven now and MI are surely the favourites to fetch a massive win here. Alzarri misses the hat-trick but he wouldn't mind. He has seven deliveries to try and get a fifth wicket.
Another one for Alzarri
Hooda hasn't looked comfortable at all out there. And Alzarri snaps him. He goes through Hooda's defence and SRH lose number six. Rashid joins Nabi out in the middle. This is SRH's last hope. Can they Afghan pair bail them out with the bat? It will be difficult.
Update - SRH 84/5
It boils down to this. SRH need 53 off the final five overs. Nabi just hit a Bumrah bouncer for a six. As long as he is there, SRH will believe they can win. MI need two more wickets to get closer to a win on the other hand. We are in for some finish.
Chahar strikes!! Wow, MI are all over SRH here. They might go onto win this by a big margin at this rate. There is assistance on this surface and Chahar makes the most of it. Yusuf mistimes a sweep and is caught near the deep. SRH lose half their side now. Mohammad Nabi has walked out to bat. He is certainly the key here.
Aaaannddd he is gone!!!
Behrendorff comes back into the attack and strikes immediately. Pandey pulls it hard but it was hit straight to Rohit at midwicket and he has plucked it. Very good catch and SRH slide. Yusuf Pathan joins Deepak Hooda out in the middle.
Update - 59/3
SRH have crawled to 59/3 in the first half of the chase. They need 78 to win in the next half now. This could get right to the wire. Can Manish redeem himself?
Alzarri strikes again
It's a big wicket once again as Vijay Shankar fails to deal with the pace of Alzarri. Vijay was late on the pull shot and the top edge is pouched by Pollard at backward point. SRH are in trouble. This will be a real test for that middle order now.
Breaking news - Kieron Pollard has actually dropped a catch. After taking a stunner last game against CSK to get rid of Raina, Pollard fails to hold onto the simplest of chances. Manish Pandey miscues Chahar and Pollard had all the time to catch that. Big moment. SRH are 39/2 after the powerplay.
Alzarri Joseph's first ball in IPL fetches him a wicket. And it's a big one. Warner inside-edges one onto his stumps and MI are pumped. SRH have lost both their openers cheaply here and their middle order will be put to test here.
MI need wickets to put up a fight and with the pacers not fetching any in the first three, Rohit Sharma brings on Chahar. Bairstow wants to go after the youngster but he miscues it completely to short third man.
Pollard goes big
What a finish! MI have actually gone onto post 136 on the board. That was nowhere in sight I'm telling you at the end of the 18th over when they were 97/7. The run rate then received a massive boost when Kaul was smashed around by Pollard. And then in then in the final over, Pollard had some luck as well as Nabi spilled a tough chance that went for a six followed by a misfield that cost another four to finish off the innings. And suddenly, after dominating for 18 overs, SRH are in a tricky position. 137 isn't a big task but MI have a strong bowling attack and the surface isn't the greatest. If MI manage to remove Baistow and Warner early, then you never know.
Wicket number 7
Rahul Chahar actually fetched some quick runs all scored behind the wicket but eventually he perishes. Bhuvneshwar strikes as the outside edge is pouched by Bairstow. MI are 97/7 after 18 overs.
Massive wicket! Hardik smashes Rashid for a six but then very next ball he finds the fielder in the deep. This is a huge blow for MI. Pollard will have to bat with the tail now.
Update - 75/5 after 15 overs
MI are struggling big time. Every single bowler from SRH is bowling in top gear and it's not easy to fetch runs against any of them. How much can Pollard and Hardik add now in the final five overs? They don't have great options to follow so they need to ensure they bat through these five overs while constantly finding the boundary at the same time.
Not sure what Ishan was trying over there. He tries to steal a single and was turned back by Pollard. But by that time, he was halfway through already and hurries back. Bairstow had already disturbed the stumps and had to uproot it. He manages to do exactly that by the time Kishan comes back and SRH have their fifth wicket. They are all over MI here. Hardik and Pollard will have to do rescue their side. 130 might work on this surface.
Krunal is the next to go. Siddarth Kaul bowls a bouncer and Krunal mistimes the pull. The top edge is easily pouched by Bairstow. MI are in real trouble now. 63/4 in the 12th over and their run rate is yet to cross six.
SRH on top
MI have lost their top order here. SRH have been bowling really well and the surface appears to be on the slower side too. MI made only 42 in the first 8 overs and de Kock goes after Siddarth Kaul. He connected well but still didn't have enough in the shot to clear the boundary as he is caught at the deep. MI need something special from their middle order now to fire.
Suryakumar Yadav attempts to sweep a knuckle ball from Sandeep Sharma and is hit on the pad. The umpire rules him out and the batsman reviews the call. He will consider himself unlucky here. The impact is umpire's call and the ball just clips the offstump. This could have gone either way. Ishan Kishan has come in now.
Yup, not a good sign before WC
SRH get their man. Rohit never looked good tonight apart from that one six he hit against Sandeep Sharma and now he tries to break the shackles against Nabi but doesn't time the ball well. Hooda at deep midwicket takes a simple catch and MI are dented early.
Eventful opening over
Bhuvneshwar should be livid with that. He almost had Rohit twice in that first over. He found swing and rapped him on the pads and it looked good. But the umpire turned his appeal down and Bairstow convinced Bhuvi to go for the review which confirmed the inside edge. Off the next ball, Rohit comes down the track and attempts a slog which is mistimed badly. Siddarth Kaul should have taken the catch at third man but he misjudges it totally. Rohit gets a life.
Toss - SRH opt to bowl
Rohit Sharma says he wanted to bat anyway so he will be pleased. SRH are unchanged but MI have made two changes. They have dropped Yuvraj Singh and have got in Ishan Kishan to replace him. Alzarri Joseph gets the nod ahead of the other overseas options to replace Malinga in the XI. This should be interesting to watch.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): David Warner, Jonny Bairstow(w), Vijay Shankar, Manish Pandey, Deepak Hooda, Yusuf Pathan, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar(c), Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul
Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Rohit Sharma(c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Jason Behrendorff, Rahul Chahar, Alzarri Joseph, Jasprit Bumrah
So MI will have to make a small change in their bowling lineup. Lasith Malinga picked up three wickets against CSK the other night, took a flight around 2 in the morning, reached Sri Lanka in time to play a 50-over domestic game where he ended up picking seven wickets. That's one of the most heroic things I've ever heard. But now, MI will not have his services for the next three games. Who will replace him tonight? Mitchell McClenaghan? Alzarri Joseph or will it Ben Cutting who has played here before?
Sunrisers are on a roll. Or should we say, David Warner and Jonny Bairstow are on a roll? They lost their opening game courtesy of a Russell special but since then, they have been clinical. Teams have failed to find a solution against their opening pair and Bairstow has certainly adapted to the IPL very well already. Warner and Bairstow are leading the run charts and once again the onus will be on them to deliver against a bowling attack that isn't short on variety. But you cannot expect your openers to do the job game after game. SRH's middle order has been under the scanner and tonight, their services will be required. Can Manish Pandey finally click? Vijay Shankar has been in decent nick and then there is the veteran Yusuf Pathan.
Mohammad Nabi's inclusion has helped them big time and his finishing prowess will be key as well. And with MI having the likes of Quinton de Kock, Yuvraj Singh and Krunal Pandya, Nabi will be likely retaining his spot which would mean Kane Williamson sitting out. MI on the other hand will be buoyed by their comfortable win over arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings. This is a side that thrives on confidence and SRH should certainly be vary tonight. Hardik Pandya has been in blazing form so far but MI would want their openers to help them make a good start. That middle order is filled with big-hitters so the contest between them and Rashid Khan should be interesting to watch. Welcome to the live blog for tonight's second game. Hopefully, it's a cracker!
