Cricket news - Persistent rain plays spoilsport in Edinburgh

This is the second time in ten days that a game has been abandoned due to rain in Scotland.

As many feared, rain ruled the roost at the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh causing the first ODI between Scotland and Sri Lanka to end in a no-result, after a six-hour long wait on Saturday (May 18).

There were predictions of rain yesterday, and as it turned out, constant drizzle became an unwanted visitor at the ground, leaving no scope for the umpires to induce any hope of starting the game. Both teams waited patiently and even engaged in a few fielding drills before the inevitable happened. In fact, the rain stopped for a good few minutes at around 12:00 pm local time, but the heavens opened up soon after, forcing the umpire to delay the scheduled inspection(s).

Both teams would be utterly disappointed with the end result for different reasons. Sri Lanka would have used this as an opportunity to try a few things with World Cup lurking around; and under the newly-appointed captain Dimuth Karunaratne, the players might need more game time to settle in as a group. Scotland too will feel the pinch of the end result as this is the second time in ten days that a game has been abandoned due to rain. Recently they lost the 2-match ODI series 0-1 to Afghanistan and now have just one game until the start of tri-series in August.

The second and final ODI is scheduled at the same ground on Tuesday (May 21).
