Rain, rain, rain...
There isn't much to report folks. Rain is still pelting down.
"It's pouring. Not sure how many people are there in the stands but I can count 9 umbrellas," says our man Kaushik.
In April 2009, on the back of a GBP 500,000 contract, the drainage system at the ground was improved. It included installation of "main, collector, lateral and rootzone slit drains, a combined duct/surface water ACO drain around the perimeter of the stands and associated surface cultivation and levelling to existing grade at the site," via pitchcare.com.
As expected, toss has been delayed as a result of the rain. The latest they can start is 16.15 local for a 20-over-game and the match has to finish by 19.15. 85 min for an innings with a 10-minute break. So, by around 3 PM, the ground has to be handed over to the umpires for play to commence by 4.15 PM.
As the rain continues to pelt Bristol, here is something interesting as to why the white Kookaburra is swinging a bit more than expected in the World Cup. I also feel with lush outfields (or comparatively) and moisture around for a few of the games so far, the shine of the ball has been retained for long periods.
Any match at Bristol evokes memories of majestic cover drives of legends of the game - Wally Hammond and Zaheer Abbas - who both played for Gloucestershire. The deeds of Jessop, Grace, Tom Goddard and Co. are chronicled and well known over a period of time. It is hard to forget Goddard's 17 wickets in a single day for the County versus Kent in 1939.
After taking a time machine through history books, let's get back to present with Pakistan and Sri Lanka locking horns in a crucial World Cup tie at the Bristol ground. The unpredictable Pakistan side slid to a massive loss against West Indies before usurping the tournament favourites, England.
Meanwhile, the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lankan side suffered an embarrassing 10-wicket loss against New Zealand before posting a hard-fought win versus Afghanistan. Can Hafeez, Sarfraz, Fakhar, Amir, Riaz, Shadab and Co. inspire Pakistan to their second successive victory? Or will Sri Lanka prove their mettle and turnaround their sagging fortunes?
The weather forecast for the match isn't great. The Met office has even issued a warning for places in South-West England which includes: Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Bristol, Devon, Dorset, North Somerset, Poole, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, Wiltshire.
Unfortunately, it is raining at the moment. However, the Pakistan team has arrived at the ground.
