Cricket news - Tamim Iqbal allays security fears ahead of Sri Lanka tour

Bangladesh play three ODIs against Sri Lanka in Colombo from July 23

Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal said on Monday that his team is happy to come forward in helping out Sri Lanka after being cleared by security, as the players are aware of how tough it can be when teams are starved off cricket at home.

BCB opted not to tour Sri Lanka initially after security concern were raised following the terrorist attack in April, and only changed their mind after being given clearance by their security personnel and government officials. Bangladesh faced a similar situation when Australia postponed their tour in 2015, citing security concern following an alarming rise of terrorist attacks in the country.

Australia did not send their Under-19 team for the 2016 World Cup in January citing security concern while later in September, England cricketers Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales decided not to travel. Earlier in 2013, West Indies Under-19 team were withdrawn from an ongoing tour after an explosion took place near their team hotel in Chittagong.

"Not at all[worried about security]," Tamim told reporters. "I think everybody was really positive. They were looking forward to come to Sri Lanka. Not many years ago we were in a similar situation and Sri Lanka was probably the team they came to us and we played a beautiful series there," he said.

"I think nobody of our team have thought of not coming to Sri Lanka. Everyone was looking forward to it. Sri Lanka has been always a beautiful country to play cricket. As I said that we have been looking after very well security wise and facility wise. There is nothing except cricket we are thinking at the momentum," he said.
