Cricket news - Ryan Higgins, David Payne stunt Worcestershire's reply

Ryan Higgins finished the day with 2 for 42

Two wickets each for Ryan Higgins and David Payne stunted Worcestershire's riposte to Gloucestershire's 354 on Day 2 at the College Ground in Cheltenham.

Gloucestershire resumed their solid batting performance from Day 1 on 339 for 7, but could only add 15 runs to their overnight total. Jack Leach wiped out the tail and ended Tom Smith's fantastic knock (83) to finish with figures of 6 for 79.

In response, Worcestershire had a nightmarish start, dropping to 24 for 1 and soon to 68 for 5 as the Gloucestershire bowlers dug their heels into the line-up. A fighting recovery - in the form of a valiant stand between Ross Whiteley and Brett D'Oliveira ensued, as they put a lid on the swift fall of wickets. They both scored half-centuries and added a 146-run stand before Matt Taylor broke the alliance by dismissing the former.

D'Oliveira carried on undefeated and finished with 66* at stumps, with Worcestershire on 232 for 6, still trailing by 122 runs.

Brief scores: Gloucestershire 354 (Tom Smith 83, Ryan Higgins 76, Chris Dent 58; Joe Leach 6-79) lead Worcestershire 232/6 (Ross Whiteley 88, Brett D'Oliveira 66*; Ryan Higgins 2-42, David Payne 2-55) by 122 runs
