Cricket news - Duleep Trophy final begins amidst confusion

Players were told about the final not being a pink-ball game only a few days ago

There was confusion all around as the Duleep Trophy final witnessed a 9:30 AM start on Wednesday (September 4), played with the red ball, even as it was supposed to be a day-night encounter at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Saba Karim, BCCI's head of operations told Cricbuzz on the first day of the final, "I don't know what the confusion is. We never said it was going to be a day-night game. All we had said was that it was going to be telecast live on TV. And even the players knew of it all along."

The only difference is that only a few weeks ago, he had claimed that BCCI was going to curtail its pink-ball experiment in Duleep Trophy to only the final. And even the players themselves didn't know of the change till the end of the last league game. As one of the key players involved in the final told Cricbuzz on the eve of the match, "I have no clue... when did all of this change, but I got to know of it only two days earlier."

The confusion over what was to be and wasn't to be doesn't end there. Even one of the BCCI operations staff claims, "We don't know what prompted the change but we were informed about it only a few days ago." But the official word from the organisers - KSCA - is that they were aware of it all along.

There isn't enough evidence to suggest as to what really went wrong - whether it was a miscommunication in the first place or some last-minute issue that caused the change, and the Indian cricket board wouldn't clarify on either.

But that's not all where the miseries end. Incidentally, when the group matches got over, two teams were tied on two points each. The differentiator used in this case i.e., the Net Run Rate through the Playing Conditions (for the domestic year 2019-20) was announced only on September 1, which is after the first two matches of the league phase were over and the third one was ongoing.

Thus, it still remains uncertain under what conditions were the teams awarded points for their matches earlier: whether there were a temporary set of rules for the tournament or were the rules from the previous season carried forward.
