Stats highlights from the second day of the third Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi

4 Rohit Sharma became the fourth player and third Indian to score double hundreds in both Test and ODIs. Rohit emulated fellow Indians Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag and West Indian Chris Gayle in achieving the feat. 212 is his highest score in Test cricket, bettering 177 he made on debut against West Indies in Kolkata in 2013-14.

2 - This was the second instance of Indian batsmen scoring three double hundreds in a single series. The previous one came against New Zealand at home in 1955-56 which incidentally was the first instance of an Indian batsman scoring 200-plus in Test cricket. While Polly Umrigar hit 223 in the first Test, Vinoo Mankad emulated him scoring 223 in the second and 231 in the fifth Test of the series.

5 - Rohit became the first Indian opening batsman to aggregate 500-plus runs in a series since Virender Sehwag scored 544 runs in three home Tests against Pakistan in 2004-05. The other Indian openers to cross the 500-run landmark in a series are Vinoo Mankad, Budhi Kunderan and Sunil Gavaskar, who managed it no less than five times.
