Cricket news - Shami, Umesh batter SA's follow-on effort

Shami was on fire, as he often is in the second innings

That Dean Elgar was hit on the helmet by Umesh Yadav and the Tea was taken three minutes before schedule should sum up the third afternoon for you. It was another few hours of India's dominance in the series -- and at home. Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on for a record eighth time after South Africa were bundled out for 162, conceding a first-innings lead of 335 runs. It was also the first instance of South Africa following-on in consecutive Tests since the 2001-02 tour of Australia.

Going into Tea on Day 3, South Africa were reeling at 26 for 4. Mohammed Shami was the wrecker-in-chief, picking three wickets out of those four.

The session started with Dane Piedt's lbw to Shami in the first over. Kagiso Rabada's run out to Umesh Yadav's throw followed in the next, but it led us to a brief lower-order resistance from George Linde and Anrich Nortje, the duo adding 32 runs across 18.2 overs. South Africa's ninth-wicket partnerships have faced over 100 overs now in this series.

Linde was finally dismissed by Umesh Yadav, who got him edging to slip in the second over of a fresh spell. Nortje was out lbw to Shahbaz Nadeem few balls later but he ended up with a score of 4 from 55 balls. Linde, in comparison, scored 37 off 81.

The second innings got off to a fiery start, with Quinton de Kock losing his off-stump to Umesh Yadav's skid and seam movement. That's when Shami took over, getting Zubayr Hamza bowled with a peach of a delivery; the off-stump was sent cartwheeling. He followed it up with Du Plessis's lbw to an incoming delivery that kept low and straightened. Bavuma was caught behind while trying to drive.

Elgar had survived through the testing spells but failed to judge the length of a short ball from Umesh. Umpires called early Tea to try and make time for the concussion procedure.

Brief Scores: India 497/9 dec. lead South Africa 162 & 26/4 f/o (Dean Elgar 16*; Mohammed Shami 3-7, Umesh Yadav 1-18) by 309 runs
