Cricket news - Brisbane Heat appoint Ryan Harris as specialist bowling coach

Harris, who's also a high performance coach at NCC, will work with the BBL franchise for the first half of the tournament

Ryan Harris has joined Brisbane Heat as their specialist bowling coach for the first half of the upcoming 2019-2020 Big Bash League. He will be working alongside coach Darren Lehmann and assistant coach James Hopes, both of whom were part of Heat's championship season in 2012-13.

Harris, who is also a High Performance coach at the National Cricket Center, will then depart before the end of the BBL to complete his duties as Australia's Under-19 coach for the ICC World Under-19 Youth Cup in South Africa early next year.

"I really enjoyed my time as a player with the Heat, and it was where I got an opportunity to dip my toe in the water with regards to coaching,'' Harris said on his appointment. "It's another great chance for me to improve my coaching experience with 'Boof' and get ready to work with some of the country's most talented young players at the Under-19 World Cup next year."

Harris is also Justin Langer's bowling coach with the Australian team during the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka.

"We used Ryan as a bowling mentor early in the BBL when he was returning from injury, and I know Dan Vettori had him on his staff in a similar role a few years ago,'' Heat coach Lehmann said. "I was lucky enough to captain Ryan as a grade cricketer, a rookie player and as a state cricketer. He was one of the most-talented players I had ever seen.

"We're really pleased we can continue his growth as a coach as I know he has a lot to offer Australian cricket in that regard. It will be great to know he will be heading on from us to help the Australian Under-19 players pursue their dreams of a World Cup."

Gavin Fitness, who's served as the club's off-field staff earlier, will also work with the Heat again during the BBL. "James Hopes and I are looking forward to having Ryan and Gav back with us and helping the Heat players execute their skills to the best of their ability and have some fun playing the game," Lehmann said.
