New South Wales vs Western Australia, Sydney
Half centuries by Daniel Hughes, Daniel Solway and Steven Smith paved way for New South Wales to reach 221 for 2 at Stumps on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield encounter against Western Australia.
In what was a slow-scoring day for the visitors, Hughes and Solway stitched a 73-run stand for the opening wicket before the former fell to Marcus Stoinis, having scored 53 of those runs. Solway continued and stitched another half-century partnership in the company of Smith. The duo batted 42.4 overs for their 72-run alliance before Solway became the last victim of the day.
Smith continued to progress slowly while Moises Henriques helped New South Wales to some quick runs in the last session. Both went to Stumps, having added 66 runs.

Centuries by Henry Hunt and Jake Weatherald powered South Australia to 359 for 1 on the opening day against Tasmania. The duo put on a record 293-run stand for the opening wicket, surpassing the previous best of 281 set by Les Favell and John Causby, after electing to bat.
Hunt, playing only his fourth first-class match, registered his maiden century, which included 16 boundaries and a six before becoming the first and only victim of the day, falling to Lawrance Neil-Smith.
