Cricket news - Ashfaq Ahmed crosses 600-run barrier with season's fourth ton

Umar Akmal scored his 41st first-class half-century.

Southern Punjab vs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Ashfaq Ahmed's fourth hundred of the season helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa collect maximum batting points against Southern Punjab as they declared their innings on 417/5 on the penultimate day of their seventh round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Abbottabad. Umaid Asif was the most successful bowler for Southern Punjab with figures of 3 for 142.

Ashfaq, who resumed from the overnight score of 81, joined Sami Aslam (683) and Imran Butt (673) in crossing the 600-run mark this season as his 143 allowed his side a substantial lead in reply to Southern Punjab's 338. The 33-year-old is now the second-highest run-getter with 675 runs from nine innings of seven matches.

Meanwhile, Southern Punjab finished the day on 15 for no loss in their second innings, still trailing by another 79 runs.

Brief scores: Southern Punjab 338 (Umar Siddiq 88, Sohaib Maqsood 57; Ahmed Jamal 6-93, Junaid Khan 2-89) and 15/0 trail Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 417-5 decl. (Ashfaq Ahmed 143, Rehan Afridi 84*, Zohaib Khan 63*; Umaid Asif 3-142) by 79 runs.

Northern vs Sindh

Northern strengthened their position against Sindh with a 255-run lead at the end of the third day of their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday (November 13).

Fawad Alam recorded his 32nd first-class hundred, but Nauman Ali took 5 for 58 as Sindh lost their last five wickets for 28 runs to be bowled out for 326, thereby gaining a 82-run first innings lead.

In response, Zeeshan Malik batted positively to get Northern off to a solid start in their second essay. Malik remained unbeaten on 96 off 131 balls as they closed Day 3 at 173 for 2.

Brief scores: Northern 408 and 173 for 2 (43 overs) (Zeeshan Malik 96 not out; Sohail Khan 1-30) lead Sindh 326 (105.5 overs) (Fawad Alam 107, Shahzar Mohammad 74, Anwar Ali 69; Nauman Ali 5-58, Sadaf Hussain 2-50) by 255 runs.

Balochistan vs Central Punjab

Balochistan continue to hold the aces in their Quaid-e-Azam fixture against Central Punjab despite the game meandering towards a tepid draw after more time was taken away due to bad light on the third day's play. To their defence, Central Punjab offered stoic resistance with the bat despite being kept on the field for 124 overs of Balochistan's first innings and suffering a top-order wobble of their own.

Umar Akmal and Usman Salahuddin scored half-centuries as Central Punjab reached 255 for 6 in response to Balochistan's 450. The pair stitched a 124-run stand for the fifth wicket after early strikes gave Central Punjab a look-in to try and force an outright victory.

Umar Akmal batted 102 balls for his 78, his 41st first-class fifty studded by 11 fours and a six. Usman was unbeaten on 74 when players walked off the field for the day and will be tasked with cutting into the 195-run deficit on the final day's play. Mohammad Ashgar was the pick of Balochistan's bowlers, picking 3 for 81.

Brief scores: Balochistan 450 lead Central Punjab 255/6 (Umar Akmal 78, Usman Salahuddin 74*; Mohammad Asghar 3-81) by 195 runs
