Cricket news - Bowlers, Rodrigues help India clinch T20I series

On a sluggish pitch, Jemimah Rodrigues's unbeaten knock of 40 off 51 deliveries helped India take a 3-0 lead.

High octane action and T20 cricket are usually synonymous but it was a complete lack of the former during India's series-clinching win in the third T20I against West Indies at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday (November 14). West Indies crawled to 59 for 9 and India took as many as 16.4 overs to chase down the paltry target, losing three wickets in the process, with Jemimah Rodrigues's unbeaten knock of 40 off 51 deliveries helping the visitors take a 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

Opting to bat, it was a sluggish start to West Indies' innings as they managed only 12 runs for the loss of two wickets in the powerplay, with Anuja Patil and Radha Yadav removing Hayley Matthews and Stacy-Ann King respectively. The next wicket came in the 10th over of the innings, when Stacy-Ann King was bowled by Deepti Sharma for 24-ball 7, which left the hosts at 26 for 3 at the halfway stage of their innings.

Things only got worse for West Indies as they lost regular wickets and were reduced to 48 for 7 by the time the 15th over was completed. The last four overs of the innings yielded only nine runs and it included a wicket maiden from Poonam Yadav in the 17th in what was a feeble batting effort from West Indies, who only managed two fours and a six in their innings.

For the first time in this T20I series, India lost their openers early as Shafali Verma fell for a duck and Smriti Mandhana got out for 3, with both falling to Matthews. Batting wasn't easy for the visiting side too, who only managed 16 in the powerplay and 16 more in the next four overs.

It was slow going but Rodrigues did not lose her patience even as she watched skipper Harmanpreet Kaur dismissed for a 19-ball 7, which ended a 25-run partnership. Deepti Sharma, despite scoring only 7 off 19, hung around with Rodrigues who scored most of the runs in the chase as she helped India over the line in the 17th over, having scored four of the five boundaries in India's innings.

Brief scores: West Indies 59/9 in 20 overs (Chinelle Henry 11; Radha Yadav 2-6, Deepti Sharma 2-12) lost to India 60/3 in 16.4 overs (Jemimah Rodrigues 40*; Hayley Matthews 2-7) by 7 wickets.
