Cricket news - Wright, Bird hand Tasmania big win in final league match

Jackson Bird's 6 for 25 completed NSW's rout.

Tasmania heaped further misery on bottom-placed New South Wales, crushing them by 120 runs in the final league match of the Marsh Cup. In doing so, they jumped above Victoria on NRR to claim fourth spot which is purely of academic interest.

Their win, regardless of the margin, was even more impressive considering they had slipped to 16 for 3 on a green pitch after being inserted in. Liam Hatcher followed up Harry Conway's removal of Ben McDermott for a first-over duck with two quick strikes of his own as the visitors looked set to press home the toss advantage.

But a splendid recovery effort built around Macalister Wright's hundred gave Tasmania a very competitive 251. The rearguard came mostly through Wright's partnership with James Faulkner as they shared a 109-run stand for the sixth wicket, with Faulkner scoring 49.

Having a lot more on the board than they'd have initially thought, Tasmania used the impetus with the sensational Jackson Bird running through the New South Wales batting line-up with a six-for.

Bird had threatened something special even in Tasmania's previous match against Queensland, where - though he finished with superb figures of 2/28 - Khawaja waded through his spell to seal the win. The seamer wasn't to be denied this time. He took four wickets in his initial eight-over burst before returning for two more and effectively closing the deal on a hapless New South Wales lineup.

Brief Scores: Tasmania 251 for 9 in 50 overs (Macalister Wright 104, James Faulkner 49; Liam Hatcher 3/46) beat New South Wales 131 all out (Jackson Bird 6/25) by 120 runs.
