Cricket news - Lyon bags five as Australia close in on 2-0
Nathan Lyon now has all the five wickets to fall in Adelaide today. The offspinner used his round-the-wicket angle to good effect, outwitting Iftikhar Ahmed, Yasir Shah and Shaheen Afridi on a docile pitch to bag his first five-wicket haul against Pakistan, leaving the visitors reeling at 229 for 8 at Dinner on Day 4, still 58 runs behind.
Much like the first session, Pakistan started proceedings well. There were a few close shaves but no dice for Australia. Mitchell Starc found a bit of reverse and had a tough chance off Mohammad Rizwan's bat fall short of Steve Smith at second slip. There was also a top-edge from Rizwan off Lyon that fell between the four men around the bat. Iftikhar got away with a pretty tight French cut but Australia had no wickets to show in the first hour.
Second ball after the drinks break, Lyon found turn and bounce from round the wicket, and had Iftikhar caught by Marnus Labuschagne at forward short leg. Yasir Shah fell LBW a while later to the very same angle from Lyon, pinned in front by the turn after a barrage of deliveries that skidded across him.
Lyon struck again in the last over before Dinner, picking his 50th wicket at the Adelaide Oval thanks to a miscued loft from Shaheen Afridi. Australia will have the new pink ball available right after the break, and Pakistan's lower order will have their task cut out under the lights.
Brief scores: Australia 589/3 decl. lead Pakistan 302 & 229/8 f/o (Shan Masood 68, Asad Shafiq 57; Nathan Lyon 5-65, Josh Hazlewood 2-59) by 58 runs.
