Cricket news - Australia surge closer towards taking 1-0 lead

New Zealand lost Raval early once again

New Zealand lost Raval early once again

The scoreboard just capsulises the dominance of Australia in the ongoing Perth Test against New Zealand. At Lunch on Day 4, New Zealand were 2 for 31, still needing 437 for an unlikely win.

When New Zealand's openers - Jeet Raval and Tom Latham - walked out to bat in the first session of Day 4, the duo had an uphill task ahead of them. Raval has been in poor form, and also his tendency to get caught in the crease not exactly helping his cause on a Perth track offering some bounce.

In the 7th over, Mitchell Starc got one to climb awkwardly by hitting a crack and Raval could only spoon an easy catch to the gully fielder. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand mainstay, followed his team-mate back to the hut, inside-edging Nathan Lyon's first delivery of the day to FSL. The delivery pitched on the rough and kicked off the surface to leave Williamson in trouble. Ross Taylor and Latham then took the side to the break.

Earlier, Tim Southee bagged his maiden Test five-for in Australia, as the hosts declared their innings at 217 for 9. Neil Wagner also snared three wickets. The likes of Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc perished in an attempt to up the ante in order to help Australia to declare.

Despite not having the services of the injured Josh Hazlewood, Australia are on course to take a 1-0 lead. By now, the track is offering enough variable bounce, and that would mean Lyon also coming into play.

Brief scores: Australia 416 (Marnus Labuschagne 143, Travis Head 56; Neil Wagner 4-92, Tim Southee 4-93) and 217/9 (Joe Burns 53, Marnus Labuschagne 50; Tim Southee 5-69) lead New Zealand 166 (Ross Taylor 80; Mitchell Starc 5-52) and 31-2 (Nathan Lyon 1-8) by 436 runs
