Cricket news - Hamstring tear set to rule Ngidi out of Boxing Day Test

Lungi Ngidi has effectively been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test against England because of a "significant Grade 1 hamstring muscle tear", it was confirmed on Sunday (December 15). The pacer is expected to be fit only by January and has been ruled out of the Mzansi Super League final as well.

"Lungi Ngidi sustained an acute hamstring muscle injury during the warm-up prior to the MSL T20 play-off on Friday. Scans done on Saturday showed a significant Grade 1 tear of his hamstring muscle and therefore he has been ruled out of the MSL T20 final," Cricket South Africa chief medical officer, Shuaib Manjra, said.

"He will commence his rehab and return to play program with the aim of getting him fit to play for the Titans in January 2020 and based on his progress, a decision will be made regarding his availability for selection for the Proteas team."

Ngidi made his Test debut in January last year but has featured in just five Tests. Several injury concerns have hurt Ngidi's chances, forcing the pacer to miss a significant amount of cricket.

He missed an ODI series against Sri Lanka because of an abdomen injury. There was a hip injury and then a knee injury that kept him out of series' in New Zealand and Australia while a side strain ruled him out of IPL 2019. Ngidi also suffered a hamstring niggle against Bangladesh in the World Cup earlier this year and then missed a handful of games as well before making a comeback.

Ngidi wasn't picked for the first two Tests before putting in an unflattering performance in Ranchi as South Africa went down 0-3. Since then, he has played a first-class game in South Africa and seven Mzansi Super League games. Apart from five Tests, Ngidi has featured in 22 ODIs and seven T20Is and has bagged 67 wickets across formats.
