James Pattinson and Mujeeb ur Rahman starred for Brisbane Heat as they beat Adelaide Strikers by seven wickets in chase of 111 at The Gabba on Tuesday (January 14). AB de Villiers (40), making his Big Bash debut, guided the side home with a partnership of 77 with Matthew Renshaw.

Pattinson put behind the nightmare of his previous game - where he went for 52 from his four overs against Perth Scorchers - and bagged 5 for 33 to dismantle the visitors. Mujeeb mounted the pressure and even though he didn't pick a wicket, he gave away just 14 from his four overs.

Strikers got off to an awful start with their top three registering single-digit scores. At 25 for 3, Pattinson refused to take the foot off the throat. He picked up the top five to leave the opponents reeling at 55 for 5. Rashid Khan top-scored for the visitors and made 28 but in the end was left with too much to do having walked in at No. 8 with more than ten overs to go.

Chris Lynn fell for a first-ball duck and Rashid Khan struck in the second over to knock off Max Bryant. That brought de Villiers to the crease, much to the delight of the 20,000-odd fans that had made their way to the clash. He started with a flamboyant cover drive on the first ball he faced against Rashid and took the side towards the total at a steady pace.

He eventually fell in the 13th over to Liam O'Connor but there were no more hiccups in what turned out to be a convincing win.

Brief scores: Adelaide Strikers 110 in 19 overs (Rashid Khan 28; James Pattinson 5-33) lost to Brisbane Heat 114/3 in 15.2 overs (Matt Renshaw 52*) by seven wickets.
