Ajit Agarkar, the former India pacer, has applied for the national selector's role, and is said to be in the race to take over as the new chairman of selectors of the men's team. MSK Prasad's tenure as the chairman of selectors came to an end this month.

The veteran pacer, who has served as the chairman of the Mumbai senior team, confirmed about applying for the role to Cricbuzz on Friday (January 24). The fast bowler bagged 288 scalps in ODIs and also finished with 58 wickets in Tests. He holds the national record for the fastest to fifty ODI wickets.

Nayan Mongia, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Chetan Sharma and Rajesh Chauhan have also applied for the roles left vacant by Prasad and Gagan Khoda. The BCCI has set January 24 as the deadline to apply for the post.

"I have been wanting to apply for a really long time but earlier, VB Chandrashekhar and Kris Srikkanth got a chance to represent from Tamil Nadu," Sivaramakirshnan told Cricbuzz. "The rotational system is not there anymore though. I think I have a good chance because I have been associated with the game constantly since the 1980s - in various capacities. As a commentator, I have had the opportunity to watch a lot of players in action.

"I will be looking to develop the spin department and also work in ensuring that some of the Indian batsmen - like Shreyas Iyer - improve on the ability as spinners, so that we have an additional bowling option. I will be with the team. I can come back as a commentator any time. But the retirement age for selectors is 60. So, this is the last opportunity for me to serve as a selector, and I feel I can do a responsible job," he added.
