USA Cricket are set to impose substantial pay cuts for their contracted players in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board is planning to slash the player salaries by at least 50% until the end of their contract period in July.

In a path-breaking announcement mid-last year, USA Cricket handed out contracts to the national team players for the very first time in history. In a country with a minimum annual wage of $15,080, the players were paid an average salary of around $70,000 with the highest salary soaring around $90,000. It is understood that the comparatively hefty paychecks (by associates standards) came in lieu of a verbal agreement between the players and the board where the board expected the players to resign from their current day jobs and focus full-time on their cricket and training activities.

There is every possibility that COVID-19 may also sabotage US' tour of Netherlands in June. The opening rounds of many cricket leagues scattered all over the US have been called off until further notice. This further makes life difficult for the cash-stripped players as a majority of them are paid between $200-$400 to turn up for a weekend game.

These are tumultuous time for the sport industry in general in the US with Rugby USA filing for bankruptcy last week and NBA and MLB suspending their seasons indefinitely, as both the bodies are set to accrue billions in losses. It remains to be seen whether COVID-19 plays a spoilsport and impacts the Minor League Cricket scheduled to take place in the month of July, but it might certainly jolt ACE's pre-season timelines and preparedness with regards to announcement of team owners, player rosters and turf wicket installations.
