Cricket news - Surrey cancel Michael Neser's contract amidst cloud over County cricket

Surrey County Cricket Club cancelled Michael Neser's contract for this year's domestic season, with the Australian seamer becoming the first overseas player to be affected by the Coronavirus situation in England.

Neser, 30, was signed on to represent the County until the end of July but the debilitating economic effects of COVID-19 forced the county's hand. Yorkshire have already placed their playing and coaching staff on furlough. In fact, last week, Tom Harrison, the ECB's chief executive, warned that the sport faced the "biggest challenge in its history" from the Covid-19 crisis and estimated the game would lose GBP 300 million should the season be totally wiped out.

"Given the testing times we find ourselves in, I would like to thank Michael and his management company for their total understanding of the current situation and full agreement of this decision," Stewart told the club website.

"The wider issues the sport is facing is paramount and it was refreshing to know Michael and his representatives are looking at the bigger picture in this sensible and responsible way."

The English domestic season has been suspended till May 28 with a strong likelihood of the start date being pushed back further
