Trent Woodhill hopes to lead the team to their maiden WBBL final appearance

Melbourne Stars have appointed Trent Woodhill as their new Women's Big Bash League coach, the club announced on Tuesday (June 2). Woodhill, who was associated with the club as a former assistant coach in the BBL, replaces David Hemp for the head coach but will retain his role as list manager across WBBL and BBL teams.

Former Australia opener Leah Poulton was named as Hemp's replacement in March. However, less than a month into the announcement, she quit to take up the role of Head of Female Cricket at Cricket NSW, leaving the slot up for grabs.

"It's a great opportunity and one I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to," Woodhill said. "I've been involved with the Stars for many years now and know the environment and the ethos well. We're backing ourselves to bounce back from some of the results in recent WBBL seasons. The competition is only getting stronger and we need to be stronger too. I'd certainly like to see a maiden finals appearance this season and win the title but there is plenty of work to do first."

Apart from his dual role with the Stars, he also has worked with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, apart from Cricket NSW in 2008-09 and New Zealand Cricket. He was also the batting coach to Australia opener Alyssa Healy.

"Trent is well known to everyone at the Stars and in the Big Bash more broadly," Cricket Victoria general manager of cricket Shaun Graf said. "I'm pleased he's accepted this opportunity to move into a head coach position with the WBBL squad." One of Woodhill's challenges will be to take the Stars to the final of the WBBL, which in five seasons so far, they haven't managed.

Cricket Australia contemplated having a reduced season for the purpose of cost-cutting, but it is unlikely to remain the case.
