Cricket news - CSK waiting for BCCI medical team to clear Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad is unlikely to play in the team's IPL 2020 opener against Mumbai Indians. The 23-year-old batsman, who tested positive for COVID-19, continues to remain in quarantine and although asymptomatic currently, will need to return two negative tests before being certified fit by BCCI's medical team to join the rest of the squad in training.

"Ruturaj has still not been cleared by BCCI medical team and is in isolation. He is unlikely to be available for the first match," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz on Wednesday (September 16).

It is a minor blow for the franchise, who had eyed the Maharashtra batsman as a possible replacement in the starting XI for Suresh Raina, who pulled out of the tournament. The 23-year-old is understood to have impressed the team management including captain MS Dhoni during the training camp in Chennai last month.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Deepak Chahar, who had also contracted the virus, has made a swift recovery and remains in contention to play the opener on September 19. Chahar started bowling in the nets only on Friday and is understood to have been rusty at the start. The 28-year-old has, however, picked up the pace over the last few days, instilling confidence in the franchise.

"We are very happy with how he has progressed. He is bowling well at the nets and looks to be in good shape. We are confident that he will be fit and ready for our first game. I can't say much about team composition but Chahar is very eager to play the first game. We will take a call before the match," Viswanathan told TOI.

Meanwhile, the franchise has confirmed that players arriving from the CPL, Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo, are fit and available for selection for the first match even as uncertainty exists on the quarantine rules for players flying in tomorrow from the England-Australia series - Sam Curran and Josh Hazlewood .
