The Decision Review System (DRS) will be in use for the first time in a Women's bilateral lateral series when England take on West Indies in the first T20I on Monday (September 21). The referral system has been used inconsistently in the women's game, made available only during the last two T20 WCs and for the 10 televised games at the 2017 50-over World Cup.

The use of DRS in women's cricket is the prerogative of the two participating boards. Both ECB and CWI are understood to have been on the same page with regards to involving the referral system.

Leading cricketers, including India ODI captain Mithali Raj have called out the irregular use of technology in the past. "If it is irregular, it gets difficult for the players to accept a concept like that," said Raj, the first women's captain to use DRS in the game against England.

"It has its own effects. It is good in a way, and it also bad also. Some dismissals go your way, but at crucial stages, some dismissals don't go your way. It's part of the sport. In the perspective of a player, if its consistently followed, it will be much better for the girls to understand it more clearly as to when to use and how to use."

The debate surfaced last year during the Ashes series with England captain Heather Knight speculating if lack of monetary resources in Women's cricket was the reason for the technological disparity. "You always want the best as players, and DRS is the best," she said. "I'd imagine the reason, as usual in women's cricket, is money, as to why we don't have it.

"I think potentially not having it affects the spectacle of the game. Sometimes decisions go your way and it's obviously the same for both sides but in an ideal world we would have DRS."
