A world cup-winning captain is a deputy in an IPL team? Not anymore

A world cup-winning captain is a deputy in an IPL team? Not anymore

A light and humorous round-up of the fourth week of IPL 2020

Chris Gayle finds a way, but RCB can't

Virender Sehwag might not have saved IPL by picking Chris Gayle this year but we finally got to see the "Universe Boss" in action. No wonder Kings XI Punjab won (and no wonder they did it their own way, huffing and puffing and calling for attention, like a box-office Gayle putting in a dive at slip).

Aakash Chopra @cricketaakash #KXIP ‘should’ win this one. But then.....you know what I mean ???? #IPL2020 04:33 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Jimmy Neesham @JimmyNeesh When you’ve been through what I’ve been through you just get a bit numb ???? https://t.co/Vat36TDETn 07:33 PM • Oct 10, 2020

It was their second win of the season, and their second over Royal Challengers Bangalore -- who have beaten three previous title-holders this year in SRH, MI and CSK but haven't been able to find a way past KXIP. Whatever be the reason (and we are definitely not pronouncing a victory for Anil Kumble here, because there's no such rivalry at play) but RCB might be taking heart from the fact that KXIP haven't left the eighth spot for a while and might not be so much of a challenger in the playoffs. But what do we know?

A world cup-winning captain is a deputy in an IPL team? Andy Flower is an assistant coach? Well, one of those questions no longer remains. Dinesh Karthik left the position for Morgan, and not for the first time that day.

Manya @CSKian716 Twice in one day that Karthik has left when Morgan has stepped in. #KKRvsMI 02:41 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Only one England player has previously captained an IPL team (we know how that panned out) but then again, mid-season handovers have worked in the past. We are looking at you, Mumbai Indians. But was everybody happy with the captaincy change? Maybe not. Just ask Tom Banton. Cap one day, and bench the other...

ABD waited, but not like Tahir

Where should ABD bat? Probably in my backyard with me, but that's not the point here. (I'd also need a backyard for that.) Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube might be left-handers and cricket -- and by that I mean the cricket commentators on air -- might like them historically but that's no reason to keep ABD padded up.

Harsha Bhogle @bhogleharsha If it was the match-up of AB vs leg spin that caused him to come down at no 6, then Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi must strut around for the rest of their cricket career, tell their relatives we were the reason the great AB didn't come out to bat! 03:22 PM • Oct 10, 2020

But if you think ABD's wait was agonising this last week, spare a thought for Imran Tahir. He's waited in the bench all season, seen Chennai Super Kings record loss after loss (and witnessed MS Dhoni change his hairstyle and the pitches, their character)and still not gotten a chance. But does an year-old purple cap look good atop a yellow kit? Probably not. Not in 2020 at least.

Imran Tahir @ImranTahirSA When I used to play many players carried drinks for me now when deserved players are in the field it’s my duty do return favors. Its not about me playing or not it’s about my team winning. If I get a chance I will do my best but for me team is important #yellove @ChennaiIPL 01:53 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Hide your bowlers, India

There are sinister signs pointing to India's tour of Australia later this year. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is already ruled out of IPL 2020 and now Ishant Sharma follows suit. Hardik Pandya can't even bowl his four overs in a T20 game while Ravichandran Ashwin's left shoulder is still finding its bearing. (See what I did there?).

Cricketkeeda @Cricketkeeda10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar first and now Ishant Sharma, slightly worried about India in Australia! 02:26 PM • Oct 10, 2020

Look at the other side and Steve Smith is a bit inconsistent against the white ball. And when that happens, we know how he compensates against the red ball later. Can Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami be whisked out of this bio-bubble and saved for Sydney please?

The Chasing Super Kings...

Ms Dhoni and Co. finally got to experience what batting first feels like...after what felt like an era when they only chased and, let's be honest, didn't do a very good job with it. So it was no surprise when 22-year-old Sam Curran walked out to open against Sunrisers Hyderabad, tilting the weighted average of top-order batting just a little to the left and winning CSK the game. He's here to stay and Dhoni makes no secret of that.

Bharat Sundaresan @beastieboy07 From the way he doesn’t feel the need to put an arm around Sam Curran while talking tactics & the matter-of-fact expression on his face when he takes a wicket, you just know MS Dhoni trusts the Englishman implicitly. Expect him to be with @ChennaiIPL for a while #IPL2020 #KKRvCSK 03:27 PM • Oct 10, 2020

But Stephen Fleming didn't punch his fists in the dugout a la Ricky Ponting although he's won less than half the games that Ponting has as a coach this season. How different can people across a narrow stretch of sea be? Turns out, very.

What we liked this week...

How Deepak Chahar stopped in his run-up and (sort of) warned Aaron Finch, who as a non-striker this year has set the stage alight. Here though, he hadn't even left his crease. But that's the thing: once Ravichandran Ashwin has paused when bowling to you -- whether you're at the striker's end or the non-striker's -- the world keeps doing that to you.

Riyan Parag's Bihu dance (which could well have been to celebrate Ben Stokes's return) and Jofra Archer's rendition of the same a few days later. And probably everything Suryakumar Yadav has done this week, including his flying catch, leg-side flicks and "Relax. Refresh. Revive" caption on Instagram.

Also, Jemimah Rodrigues quarantine.

Jemimah Rodrigues @JemiRodrigues Day one into quarantine (: 02:06 PM • Oct 10, 2020

What we didn't...

Prithvi Shaw's batting against Trent Boult (but he could well be emulating India's top-order against him in recent times). Paul Reiffel's umpiring, especially when MS Dhoni's behind the stumps. The colour of Chris Green's shoes. And Mumbai Indians. (Because they are so good that you can't even make a joke.)
