Shah Rukh Khan @iamsrk Good to hav our 100th IPL match win. Well done [email protected] @prasidh43 @DineshKarthik @NitishRana_27 #Rahul @Russell12A @harbhajan_singh ( good to see u even if briefly )@Sah75official @patcummins30 actually all were so good to watch. 05:43 PM • Apr 04, 2021

Rana and Tripathi the stars of the win...

... but don't discount that cameo from Dinesh Karthik at the end. He hit 22 off 9 after KKR seemed to have lost their way post that Rana-Tripathi stand. Prasidh Krishna and Varun Chakravarthy bowled well in crucial phases and those two death overs from Russell were spot on!

Abdul Samad...

hits 2 sixes off Pat Cummins but SRH leave themselves with 22 to get off the final over. They'll have to question their middle order (again) once more...

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks Sixes hit by Abdul Samad in IPL 3 off Pat Cummins 2 off Jasprit Bumrah 2 off Anrich Nortje 1 off Kagiso Rabada #SRHvKKR #SRH 05:29 PM • Apr 04, 2021

Russell effectively closes out the game

Smart move to bowl from round the wicket. Those deliveries angling across the right handers need great levels of skill to hit. AB did last year at Sharjah. Manish and Vijay Shankar can't. Just six runs and the wicket off Vijay Shankar!

Should it have been Samad before Nabi

SRH went for the experience but Nabi has troubles at times to hit the hard lengths. He's also copped one from Krishna dangerously to the back of the head. Doesn't have the extra protection either (why?!).

Nabi miscues a slower one and is caight at extra cover. 14 off 11 at this stage has left SRH with 57 to get off 24!

Cummins nips the Bairstow problem...

Brought back in just to land the Bairstow wicket and he gives KKR just that. Bairstow appeared to have lost some rhythm after getting to 50. Cuts a ball straight to point.

69 to win from 30 now

Back in it... 88 to win off 48

A superb half-century for the in-form Bairstow. Terrific counter-attack after the dismal PowerPlay. He's cleared his front foot and swung through the line. 32 balls for the 50 and SRH believe once more.

At the other end, Manish Pandey has dropped anchor. Expect him to start taking risks soon too. Maybe in a couple of overs. Who is KKR's death overs specialist now?

Bairstow key for SRH here on...

The Englishman has raced away to 36 off 24 and the run-rate has been given a bit of a lift. After 9 overs, SRH have matched KKR's tally of 69 runs. They've just lost 1 extra wicket.

Long way to go for SRH from here

... but there is a semblance of a rebuild job from Bairstow and Pandey. Just 35 in the PowerPlay, with both openers in the shed!

SRH lose openers cheaply

Prasidh Krishna makes up for that early drop. Squares Warner up with a pacy delivery. There's also bounce on that and zips through to the keeper off the outside edge.

And then Shakib Al Hasan strikes with his first ball on return to KKR. Saha drags an attempted cut back on to his stumps.

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks Only the third wicket for Prasidh Krishna in Powerplay in IPL across 24 innings and 42.3 overs. And what a strike. #SRH have all right-handers to follow against Shakib (SLA) and Varun (LS). #SRHvKKR 04:03 PM • Apr 04, 2021

Harbhajan vs Warner in IPL: 94 balls, 112 runs, 4 dismissals, ER 7.15

And Harbhajan should have had him for a 5th time. Deceives the SRH captain with dip and bounce, elicits an uppish drive. But another NSW man Pat Cummins reprieves Warner at backward point! Ouch...

So Saha will open Warner will open. Gives SRH the Bairstow power in the middle overs. Expectedly Harbhajan gets the ball straight away!

Sanjay Manjrekar @sanjaymanjrekar More than the batting number, it’s when you come into bat, that’s crucial. KKR got that spot on tonight! Russell came in with 4 overs to go. And DK, always at his best & dangerous with a handful of balls left. #KKRvSRH 04:10 PM • Apr 04, 2021

A quality finish job from DK

22 off 9 balls at the end from the former KKR skipper takes KKR to 187. It's still a big total given that the ball is stopping and there is some spin on offer. KKR have three spinners of their own in the form of Varun CV, Shakib Al Hasan and Harbhajan Singh!

Prasanna @prasannalara KKR finish at 187 which is 20 runs more than the average winning score and SRH will be with out Williamson which will make the chase even more interesting.SRH need to be 54/1 after powerplay to stay ahead of this chase 03:41 PM • Apr 04, 2021

Rashid, Nabi bring SRH back

KKR have lost their way somewhat here. 4 wickets in 15 balls!

Tripathi, 23-ball 58

A superb innings at No.3. You wonder sometimes if Tripathi is not opening, if there's merit in him playing in the top-5 at all. Today he got going from the getgo. Didn't let Nabi settle and then targeted the short square boundary against the seamers. He's done his job, out in the 16th over gives Andre Russell just enough to push this total beyond gettable levels.

Not Nabi's night

He was picked ahead of Holder given we're in Chepauk. But his 3 overs have thus far cost 29 and yielded no wickets either. The great thing for KKR is Rahul Tripathi has walked in at 3, and hasn't dropped anchor or anything. The pair has added 51 off 28 balls since Gill fell.

37-ball 50 for Rana

Gets there with a six off Shankar. It's his 12th IPL fifty, 4th in 6 games as opener. Great start to the season. He can keep hitting now, KKR have big finishers to follow in the backend.

Nitish Rana last six innings in IPL: 0, 81, 0, 87, 0, 50*

Rashid with the breakthrough

As always. This is beautiful deception from the Afghan. The googly is bowled at a slower pace. Gill is too early on the slog sweep. Misses, and timber! KKR had just 1 50+ opening stand last season, they've got one in the first game in IPL 2021. Gill didn't have much to do, but this could be the opening pair to watch out for this season.

Rana, Gill make rapid start

Nabi is the first of the SRH spinners to be introduced into the attack, inside the PP. Sandeep has gone for 23 from his 2 overs. Natarajan has given away 12 from his first. Rana is happy to hit over the top, through the line. SRH hav been guilty of bowling a tad too wide for him, allowing him to free his arms. Even a slight miscue is good enough. He has 8 boundaries already. KKR 50/0 in the PowerPlay. Almost seems like this would be a scenario target in the nets.

Gaurav Dubey @dubey_gd @kaushik_cb @cricbuzz What an important season for @NitishRana_27 .Terrific youngster, need to pay back the faith @KKRiders has shown in him. 02:07 PM • Apr 04, 2021

The slower balls are stopping

Nitish Rana has had a couple of close shaves viz. an inside edge past legstump and a ball almost lobbing too mid-on for a simple catch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Sandeep Sharma bowling two overs each. Sandeep may bowl another one with Bhuvi and Natarajan bowling at the death.

Kruthay @Kruthay @kaushik_cb @cricbuzz I think Saha should’ve stayed near the stumps for Sandeep. It would At least keep the batsman stay in his crease. So that, Sandeep can bowl his wishful lengths. 02:42 PM • Apr 04, 2021

A L-R opening combo for KKR

Rana moves up to join Gill at the top. Rahul Tripathi will possibly bat, if Gill gets out early. Let's wait and watch!

Tactics Corner feat. Deepu Narayanan

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks So #SRH picks Bairstow ahead of Williamson. Will have to wait to see if he opens or bats at #4. If he bats at #4 add more to the middle order muscle of SRH with Nabi also around. Bairstow's presence could also mean a more anchor-oriented role for Warner. #SRHvsKKR https://t.co/Cqm0NGV2om 01:48 PM • Apr 04, 2021

Toss - SRH elect to chase

The big news is that Kane Williamson won't start. Bairstow's form gives him the edge. Given we're in Chennai, Md. Nabi edges out Jason Holder.

Morgan, Russell, Shakib and Cummins will be the four foriegn players for KKR. No real surprise there even though Sunil Narine has been one of the legends of IPL.

Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan(c), Dinesh Karthik(w), Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy

Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): David Warner(c), Jonny Bairstow, Wriddhiman Saha(w), Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar, Abdul Samad, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Sandeep Sharma

Suru Manohar @970163bca6d9414 @kaushik_cb Nabi in the powerplay would be a good option. Gives lot of death bowling options for warner 02:01 PM • Apr 04, 2021

ICYMI - 4 TN players in this game at the Chepauk

Vijay Shankar & T. Natarajan in the orange corner and Dinesh Karthik and Varun Chakravarthy in the purple. Good to see Varun CV back, he's had a bit of bad luck following him since the end of last IPL after which he was picked to the national team but never managed to get a game because of fitness issues.

Pitch - 'Lot drier than the one used in the opener (MI-RCB)'

Spin. Spin. Cutters. More Spin. So Nabi over Holder? Also remember KKR have a couple of lefties at the top of the order.

A KKR debut for Harbhajan Singh

The wily ol' Harbhajan has a lot of happy memories at the Chepauk. He recently even played for CSK in the 2019 season and ran through a strong RCB line-up in the season opener then.

This is Harbhajan Singh's first professional game since IPL 2019 final on 12 May 2019, 699 days ago

Will Morgan throw him straight away against David Warner?

Gaurav Dubey @dubey_gd @kaushik_cb @cricbuzz Today's fixture is classical bowling contest, lot of variety. Looking forward to batsman who can score big in this match. 01:18 PM • Apr 04, 2021

What happened when these teams last met...

They played out a Super Over! Lockie Ferguson put the stumps in grave danger and Andre Russell hobbled his way to the crease to bowl a final over that denied David Warner's team win. In fact, KKR won both games against SRH last time but their rivals pipped them to a Playoffs spot!

How do these teams fare in Chennai?

SRH have never won in Chennai. KKR have lost the last four encounters here. One of these unfortunate streaks will end today (rain, please!)

Season Preview

Great way to build up to this clash by reading Narbavie and Akash'sseason previews. There's a sense that given SRH's balance, they could be one of the closest challengers to Mumbai's crown. KKR, on the other hand, are a team bristling with talent but will need to mix them all well.

Prelude

Hello are you ready for an early peak into an Ashes rivalry? It's Morgan v Warner, KKR vs SRH at the Chepauk today. SRH have been the super consistent side over the last five years, making the playoffs on each occasion. KKR have been more up and down since their second title in 2014. These two teams have often run into each other in crucial encounters over the last few seasons.

Watch out for the slow surface at Chepauk. There should be spin on offer too. Keep an eye on that man, Rashid Khan! Who do you think will be the key player this game. Let me know as we build up to the crucial toss!
