Cricket news - Live Cricket Score: CSK vs RR, Match 12, IPL 2021
Jadeja knocked over Buttler to trigger a collapse
So CSK recording an impressive win on the same day they made their IPL debut against Kings XI Punjab in 2008. Shutters down on that note. See you again.
Sanju Samson: We never expected turn. The dew didn't come and the ball was still turning, so it was a bit shocking to see.
MS Dhoni: When you are playing, you don't really want anyone to say he's unfit. Performances are something that's not guaranteed. I wasn't guaranteeing performances when I was 24, I can't guarantee when I am 40, but at least if people can't point finger at me that he's unfit then that will be a big positive for me. I have to keep up with the younger guys, they are very fast, it's good to challenge them.
A Royal implosion to spin, NRR boosting win for CSK
The Chennai Super Kings gave their captain Thala a nice 45-run victory in his 200th game as captain. Tewatia and Unadkat found the boundaries on a few occasions but the Royals dug a deep hole for themselves slipping from 87/2 to 97/7. A 45-run victory meant CSK bagged back-to-back net run rate pushing wins that has given then +1.194 - the best this season. Moeen Ali was named Player of the Match.
Dhoni masterminds a massive collapse
Jadeja foxed Buttler with turn
With Buttler muscling a six in the 10th over, the ball was changed as it could not be retrieved and Thala smartly hinted on the stump mic to Jadeja - this is dry, so it will turn. Bravo then bowled a quiet 11th over and Dhoni persisted with the expensive Jadeja.
11.1 Buttler bowled Jadeja
11.5 Dube LBW Jadeja
He was probably holding Moeen since England's teammate Buttler was at the crease, but once he was off, he threw the ball to Moeen next over.
12.5. Miller LBW Moeen
14.1 Parag caught off Moeen
14.3 Morris caught off Moeen
The Royals lost 5 wickets for 10 runs to kill the game
Jadeja knocks over Buttler on 49
Despite being expensive (2 overs, 22 runs), Dhoni persisted with the left-arm spinner and CSK got a massive boost when Jadeja got one to turn big, beat the at and rattle the sticks.
Buttler took toll off Jadeja with a couple of fours and six, while Dube took care of Thakur after the powerplay.
Curran removes Samson for 1
The Royals were hit hard as Sam Curran cleverly took pace off on a short ball to force a mishit off the back foot to mid-on. RR 45/2 after 6 overs as Buttler kept the scoreboard moving with a four and six off Chahar the previous over.
Vohra picks out the fielder placed before the ball
Deepak Chahar started with a poor first over conceding 11 runs, but Curran bowled a sensible over from the other end, almost getting Buttler. His England team-mate Jos Buttler edged a wide ball and escaped as Shardul Thakur it was just out of Shardul Thakur's reach. Vohra attacked Curran with a six over unmanned deep mid-wicket, but hit the next ball to Jadeja who was stationed after the six.
Cameos from Bravo, Curran give CSK a challenging 188/9
The Royals leaked 45 runs off the last 3 overs as CSK recovered from Sakariya's blow. Curran was run-out 13(6) looking for a non-existent second run, while Bravo made 20 off 8 balls, including a crucial last ball six. He survived a run-out running for the second run without the bat as he sprinted fast to get his foot in. The bat went soaring into the night sky as he attempted a six off Mustafizur.
Sakariya gets Dhoni for a 3-fer
The CSK skipper did manage to hit a couple of boundaries but the youngster outsmarted the veteran hitter with a well disguised slower ball to be caught at cover. CSK 147/6 in the 17.2 overs
CSK stall with Dhoni's dots
MS Dhoni walked in, put in an acrobatic to escape a run-out and played four successive dots off Tewatia as the run rate was brought down considerably.
Dhoni took six balls to open his account
And he gets Raina too!
The ploy to take spinners off and get Sakariya back has worked wonders for the Royals. Raina tried to muscle a slot ball, but he didn't bother to keep it down as he wanted to clear mid-off, instead hit it straight to Morris. CSK 125/5 in 14 overs as Thala replaces Chinna Thala
Sakariya with the big wicket of Rayudu
Rayudu tried to crunch a six off the back foot, timed it very well but didn't get the height as Riyan Parag held onto his second catch near deep point.
Rayudu comes out attacking
With CSK 78/3 in the 10th over, Ambati Rayudu stepped out second ball and hit three sixes in the space of 7 balls as Suresh Raina played second fiddle.
Tewaita gets set Moeen
Moeen yet again failed to convert a good start as he holed out at deep mid-wicket twice in two games. Tewatia got the reward for forcing the batsman to fetch the ball from wide of off stump.
Moeen crunching the ball
Suresh Raina was tested with the short ball stuff, but Moeen Ali hit a couple of brilliant sixes - a Mustafizur slower ball was smashed into the top tier, while Morris was sent flat, absolutely flat for a 74-metre six over mid-wicket. CSK were 66/2 in 8 overs at the first time-out.
Morris cuts short Faf's stay
Faf du Plessis took Unadkat apart in his third over smashing three fours and a six, but Chris Morris came on to have his countryman caught at deep point. The fielder was wisely placed square and the Royals got a big reward.
Ruturaj falls cheaply again
The youngster tried get himself in and also ran at the bowler a few times, but Mustafizur Rahman used his experience to bowl a nice off-cutting slower ball to outsmart Gaikwad. Dube swallowed the skier at mid-off.
Dropped first ball
Ruturaj Gaikwad escaped a golden duck when Unadkat found the outside edge with his angle across the right-hander. Rahul Tewatia the fielder at wide slip had to dive to the right, but only managed fingertips.
Ian Bishop takes a close look at the pitch
"I want to compare the two venues. Down south in Chennai, it's been a bat-first situation. 6 games played, 5 of them have won by teams batting first. It's a turnaround here at Wankhede. 5 games played, 4 of them have won by the teams chasing and the other game separated by a solitary run. It means pitches here have offered either swing or seam to those bowling first or it's been generally a good chasing ground because of moisture later on. This one is pitch number 6 where there was 147 scored where there was swing and seam. It looks drier and warmer today. If the ball swings, it won't be because of the moisture on the surface. So, in the first 10 overs, you've gotta hit that good length area. The strike rate of bowlers who hit that area is much better but the trouble for bowlers later in the game is that little bit of dew that appears and allows the ball to slide onto the bat and the batsmen then feast on it. Great skill needs to come into play and once again yorkers in the second half of the innings is going to be key."
Sanju Samson calls tails and bowls
You got to say "we will bowl" if you are the Wankhede. Tough to defend, early movement, plenty of runs and the ground's bestie "dew" will be there inevitably. Samson very happy with everything and he wouldn't want to change a winning combo, so same team. Dhoni backs Ruturaj Gaikwad to be back in the runs soon and names an unchanged XI.
CSK have a potent bowling line-up when there is grass and movement on offer with the new ball, but if it's a flat surface like their first game against Delhi Capitals they do have a bit of worry. Faf, Moeen, Curran, Bravo have been the four overseas players so far. Is Dhoni keen on getting Ngidi back to increase the pace battery?
Welcome to Battle Royale, battle of the wicket-keepers! MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings are rejuvenated after a convincing win over Punjab Kings. Their bowlers were disciplined the other day but they got to watch their punctuality too because one more slow over-rate offence could mean their captain will have to sit out for a few games.
