Cricket news - Faulkner, Rashid help Lahore consolidate top spot

Rashid Khan picked up his first T20 five-wicket haul in franchise cricket.

Rashid Khan picked up his first T20 five-wicket haul in franchise cricket.

James Faulkner's all-round show along with lower-order cameos, followed by Rashid Khan's maiden fifer in franchise cricket ensured a comfortable 10-run victory for Lahore Qalandars over Peshawar Zalmi, despite a valiant 73 from Shoaib Malik, to consolidate their spot at the top of the points table.

Put in to bat first by Zalmi, Qalandars were pushed on the backfoot early after being reduced to 25 for 4 halfway through the eighth over. However, an 81-run partnership ensued between Ben Dunk (48) and Tim David (64 not out) laid the base for a remarkable comeback. Dunk hit three sixes, and two boundaries, in his 33-ball knock but fell agonisingly short of his fifty. Tim David got his off 30 deliveries, with a six off Wahab Riaz in the penultimate over. But it was James Faulkner's late cameo that gave Qalandars' total that extra zing. The Australian allrounder smacked two sixes and a boundary at death, making a total of 22 in just the seven deliveries he faced, to help his side finish with a competitive 170/8 on the board.

Faulkner wasn't done for the day though. Bowling the second over, he took out both Zalmi openers in the space of three deliveries to reduce them to 5 for 2 before Rashid Khan took over the role of the tormentor. Veterans Shoiab Malik (73) and David Miller (21) briefly combined to stitch together a 51-run stand and put Zalmi's chase back on track. Until Rashid was introduced and sucked the momentum off with regular strikes.

Rashid cut short birthday boy Miller's stay before also dismissing Rovman Powell one ball later in the 10th over. Similarly in the 12th, he sent back the Caribbean pair of Sherfane Rutherford and Fabian Allen in the space of two deliveries to leave Zalmi reeling at 73 for 6. He completed his fifer with Riaz's wicket in his final over, while Malik kept the assault going from one end with little support. His brilliant 73 off 48, which included four sixes and seven hits to the boundary ropes, ended in an unfortunate hit wicket when he stepped on his off-stump, practically ending the faint hope left for Zalmi. Umaid Asif's three lusty blows after that only merely helped in reducing the defeat margin.

Brief scores: Lahore Qalandars 170/8 in 20 overs (Tim David 64, Ben Dunk 48; Fabian Allen 2-36) beat Peshawar Zalmi 160/8 in 20 overs (Shoaib Malik 73; Rashid Khan 5-20) by 10 runs.
