West Indies and Sri Lanka have won the three previous editions.
West Indies' loss to Australia in their final game of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 WC 2021 has meant that they would have to take the additional qualifying route in order to make it to the Super 12 for the next edition of the T20 WC in 2022. West Indies, ranked 10th in the T20I rankings, will be joined by Sri Lanka in the first round.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, moved up to the eighth spot despite losing all their matches in the Super 12 stage of the current tournament – thanks to their recent T20I victories at home against Australia and New Zealand – and have earned a direct qualification for the 2022 World Cup which will be held in Australia. Afghanistan too are among the eight teams who have earned a direct entry for the Super 12.
The winner and runner-up of the T20 WC 2021, along with the next six highest ranked teams in the T20I rankings at the cut-off date of November 15, were set to qualify directly for the Super 12 stage of the tournament. England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, along with Bangladesh and Afghanistan, will finish high enough in the rankings to seal direct entry for the Super 12 stage.
West Indies secured a lone victory against Bangladesh in the 2021 edition, with the two-time champions being bowled out for 55 in their opening encounter against England. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, managed to defeat both Bangladesh and West Indies but weren't quite a match against England, Australia and South Africa.
Scotland and Namibia, the two teams who made it to the Super 12 stage of the ongoing tournament, will join West Indies and Sri Lanka in the first round of the next edition.
