Chennai Super Kings have sought a replacement for Sam Curran for the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL). According franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has, in principle, approved the request and it is now up to the team to choose the player who can fit into the shoes of Curran.
Given the limited time, there are not too many options for CSK, and it is learnt that they are considering picking one of the four West Indian pacers immediately available for recruitment. Fidel Edwards, Sheldon Cottrell, Dominic Drakes and Ravi Rampaul are the four under consideration and it is learnt that of them, three are currently in Dubai itself. They have been brought as standbys/net bowlers by different sides.
As per the rules, a franchise can seek a replacement before their last game and Chennai sign off the league stage with a game against Punjab Kings on Thursday (October 7) afternoon. The team management said the decision will be made after consultation with captain MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming.
“We are going for practice now (on Wednesday evening). We'll take a call after the nets. We are aware that we don't have much time to seek the replacement. We will decide soon whom to take as well as whether to take,” Viswanathan said.
The franchise CEO has also revealed that Curran (23), who has also been ruled out of the T20 WC, will fly to England on Wednesday night. Curran complained of back pain after CSK's match against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Subsequent tests have revealed that he cannot be fit for action because of lower back issues.
