Danielle Wyatt and Charlotte Dean played crucial roles with the bat and ball respectively as England went 2-0 up in the ODI series.
Wyatt, who scored an unbeaten 63 coming in at No. 7 also shared a 51-run stand for the final wicket with Tash Farrant (22) that turned out to be critical in a rain-curtailed game.
The first half of England's innings was held together by Laura Winfeld Hill (39) even as Sophie Devine and Hannah Rowe ripped through England's top order picking two wickets apiece. When Lea Tahuhu chipped in as well to reduce England to 85/5, the hosts were left in a spot of bother.
Wyatt and Winfeld Hill began a resurrection act before the latter was run out. Wyatt then made sure that her unbeaten half century got England towards a respectable total.
In the chase, New Zealand got off to a comfortable start with the openers – Suzie Bates and Lauren Down – putting on a brisk 40-run stand. However, Kate Cross first triggered a collapse getting both the openers as New Zealand slipped to 85/4. And as rain further led to a revision of the target, New Zealand were left chasing 183 in 42 overs.
The final collapse was triggered by rookie spinner Charlotte Dean who ripped through the lower order to finish with 4-36 and help England clinch a narrow 13-run win.
Brief Scores: England Women 197 (Danielle Wyatt 63*; Leigh Kasperek 3-31) beat New Zealand Women 169 (Brooke Halliday 29; Charlotte Dean 4-36) by 13 runs (by DLS method)
