Sibley, Parkinson And Mahmood Picked In Lions Squad For Australia TourDom Sibley was dropped from the Test side after the Lord's defeat to India.

Dom Sibley, Matt Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood have been named in a 14-man England Lions squad for their tour to Australia next month.

The Lions party will shadow England's senior squad in the early stages of their Ashes tour, providing Joe Root's team with opposition for their two warm-up matches ahead of the first Test at the Gabba. The Lions will also play Australia ‘A' in a four-day match before returning home on December 16, midway through the second Test in Adelaide. It will be the first Lions tour for almost two years because of the pandemic. Their last overseas trip was also to Australia, at the start of 2020.

Sibley was dropped from England's Test team after the second Test against India at Lord's following a poor run of form, and replaced by Haseeb Hameed at the top of the order. Sibley was not included in the Ashes squad – the back-up top order player selected was Zak Crawley – and missed out on a central contract too but has a chance to re-establish his credentials with the Lions. He scored a hundred at the MCG against a strong Australia ‘A' attack on the last Lions tour.

Parkinson and Mahmood have been included in the Lions squad after excellent home summers. Leg-spinner Parkinson took 36 Championship wickets at 20.55 for Lancashire while Mahmood was England's standout bowler during the ODI series against Pakistan and picked up 28 Championship wickets in eight matches for the Red Rose county. Both had strong claims to be part of the full Ashes squad but have had to settle instead for a place on the Lions tour.

Four players capped at Test level are included with James Bracey, Mason Crane and Ben Foakes joining Sibley in the squad. Brydon Carse has also been selected following his ODI debut earlier this summer while his Durham teammate Alex Lees returns to the Lions set-up for the first time in six years. Somerset captain Tom Abell has also been included and will join up with Brisbane Heat for a stint in the Big Bash at the conclusion of the Lions schedule.

Lancashire batter Josh Bohannon, Surrey wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and the Warwickshire pair of seamer Liam Norwell and opening batter Rob Yates have received their first call-ups to the Lions. Norwell took 49 wickets at 18.26 in Warwickshire's run to the County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy titles while left-handed opener Yates scored four hundreds in that campaign. Bohannon averaged 53.31 for Lancashire in the Championship while 21 year-old Smith made three hundreds for Surrey.

The selectors decided not to include Liam Livingstone in the squad so he can spend some time at home after a hectic year. The selectors also felt that a Lions tour would not provide much benefit to the 28 year-old given the amount of international experience he already has. He is also playing in the T10 in the UAE after the T20 WC.

The Lions party will leave for Australia on November 4 along with England's Test specialists. A captain has not yet been announced while the coaching team will also be named in due course. The date for the four-day match against Australia ‘A' is also yet to be confirmed.
