Australian players' availability for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 15 is subject to a few conditions, while the Sri Lankans will be away on national duty in Bangladesh in the middle of the season. But most other cricket boards, including England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), have given the go-ahead for their players' participation in the March-end to May-end league.
“After the IPL, the ECB is committed to starting the 1st WTC Test Match v New Zealand on 2 June, 2022. The player availability for all the ECB players will be through to Sunday, 29 May, 2022 (sic),” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed the franchises ahead of the mega-auction, on February 12 and 13.
Confirming receiving the mail on Wednesday (February 9), a franchise official has revealed to Cricbuzz that their understanding of the mail is that the English players will be able to take part in the league from March 28 to May 29. The IPL is expected to commence on March 27.
As about the Australians, it is a staggered reporting with some coming joining from the beginning and some others around April 11 because of the tour to Pakistan in March-April. Cricket Australia (CA) has also stressed on the importance of participation in the Sheffield Shield, which ends in early April.
“The State players whose team does not qualify for the Sheffield Shield Final will be available from March 27,” the BCCI mail notes adding, “State player whose team qualifies for the Sheffield Shield Final will be available from 5, April.” The Sheffield Shield final is from March 31 to April 4.
Further, Australia's Test-only players whose state team does not qualify for the Sheffield Shield final will be available from March 26 as the three-Test series between Pakistan and Australia ends on March 25. The players coming from overseas, however, will have to undergo five-day quarantine.
Australian Test only players whose State team qualifies for the Sheffield Shield Final will not available till April 5 while Australia's ODI/T20I players will report for the IPL duty only on April 6, after the completion of the white ball games against Pakistan which end on April 5.
The Sri Lanka players will miss the IPL action for two weeks – from May 11 to 23 because of their two-Test away series against Bangladesh. The Tests are part of the second World Test Championship (WTC) programme.
The same way, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has informed the BCCI that their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will miss the IPL from May 8 to 23, because of the Tests against Bangladesh but Mustafizur Rahaman has been spared to fully take part in the IPL. The presence of other Bangladesh players, like Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam, is subject to their selection for the international matches – against South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Overall, 220 overseas players have made themselves available for the IPL and of them 47 are from Australia, 33 from South Africa, 24 each from England and New Zealand, 23 from Sri Lanka and five from Bangladesh, among others.
