Saini (3/42) was the pick of the bowlers for India A on the opening day.
Half-centuries from opener Sarel Erwee (75), Tony de Zorzi (58) and Khaya Zondo (56) helped South Africa A to 249 for 7 at stumps on the opening day of the third and final unofficial Test against India A at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Monday (December 6).
Having opted to bat first, the hosts lost skipper Pieter Malan (0) and Zubayr Hamza (16) in quick succession in the morning to be reduced to 44 for 2 inside 18 overs. However, they managed a commendable recovery through a crucial 111-run stand between Erwee and De Zorzi, who both brought up hard-earned fifties.
The well-set pair though fell in the space of 12 overs – Saini picking up his second to deny Erwee a century after de Zorzi was run out – leaving them in a tricky spot again at 187 for 4. Saini struck again to claim his third victim, without letting the hosts anything more to their total.
But Zondo struck a vital fifty to lift their spirits, adding a 51-run stand with Sinethemba Qeshile (22) for the sixth wicket, to take them close to the 250-run mark. This pair too fell in quick succession, in the last half an hour of the day, as the Indians managed to cover some ground. At stumps, Marco Jansen (4*) and Migael Pretorius (1*) held the fort for the hosts.
Brief scores: South Africa A 249/7 (Sarel Erwee 75, Tony de Zorzi 58, Navdeep Saini 3/42, Saurabh Kumar 2/52) vs India A
