South Africa A put on a much-improved show with the bat on the third day to take control of their contest against India A. Having collapsed to 268 in the first innings despite being in a strong position, the home side breezed their way to 196/1 at stumps, extending their lead to 188.
Skipper Pieter Malan made a strong start to make up for his first-innings duck but was trapped leg-before-wicket by Navdeep Saini for 27. However, the India A attack couldn't make further inroads throughout the day. Opener Sarel Erwee was watchful in his approach whereas Zubayr Hamza was fluent, fetching regular boundaries.
Both the batters kept the Indian attack at bay and ended up extending their partnership beyond 150. By stumps, Erwee was unbeaten on 85 whereas Hamza had raced to an unbeaten 78 off just 117 deliveries.
Earlier in the day, India A were bowled out for 276 in their first innings. Resuming at 229/6, the visitors lost K Gowtham early in the day. Unfortunately, Saurabh Kumar and mainstay Ishan Kishan also departed in successive overs to add to their misery. Kishan fell nine short of a century. If not for a little cameo from Saini (27 off 22), India wouldn't have fetched a slender lead of 8 runs, which was wiped away with ease eventually.
Brief scores: South Africa A268 & 196/1 (Sarel Erwee 85*, Zubayr Hamza 78*; Navdeep Saini 1/49) lead India A276 (Ishan Kishan 91, Hanuma Vihari 63; Lutho Sipamla 5-99) by 188 runs
