Khaleel Ahmed suffered an injury while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2021
Khaleel Ahmed is a serious doubt for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament (SMAT). The left-arm pacer, who was representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), was sent back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) more than a week ago on complaints of side stress and has been undergoing rehab at the Bangalore facility of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since.
After playing two games for the Sunrisers in Dubai and Sharjah on September 22 and 25, he complained of stress following which he was referred to his state association by the franchise support staff. As Khaleel is not a contracted player, he was referred to the NCA by his home state association, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RC).
Sources have revealed to Cricbuzzthat it will be difficult for the 23-year-old India pacer, who has played 11 ODIs and 14 Twenty20 Internationals, to be ready for the national Twenty20 championship which starts on November 11 but the teams will have to report at the designated venues by October 27 as part of the bio-security protocols.
When contacted, RCA confirmed the injury. “Khaleel Ahmed was injured during one of the games during the IPL. Upon reviewing, his IPL physio referred him to the NCA. Currently, he is under the supervision of the NCA physios and can only resume cricket post the NCA fitness approval,” RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot told Cricbuzz.
Joining Khaleel at the NCA are India spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. Like Khaleel, Kuldeep recently returned midway through the IPL in UAE, and had a surgery on his knee on return. It is understood that the Kanpur spinner is also having rehab in the NCA and expectedly, he too won’t be available for his home state Uttar Pradesh in the Mushtaq Ali tournament.
As about Sundar, it is still unclear if he will be ready for SMAT although he has been named in the Tamil Nadu squad for the tournament. Sundar has been recovering from a finger injury that ruled him out of the Test series in England, IPL (for Royal Challengers Bangalore) and the ensuring T20 WC.
