Winner of today's game has an assured top-two finish
Welcome to Cricbuzz's live blog for the game between Rishabh Pant's Delhi Capitals and MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in Dubai. You can follow the ball-by-ball commentary here
Hetmyer to the rescue as DC win
A fantastic innings of 28* off 18 from Shimron Hetmyer who's come in at No.7 and hit a flurry of boundaries to take DC home. It was shaping into a very tight finish, with Shardul Thakur dismissing Ashwin and a well-set Dhawan in the same over but Hetmyer, with 28 needed from last 3 overs, came out all attacking and never gave CSK a chance. He, though, was offered one by K Gowtham who dropped a simple catch at long-on with the batsman still on 12.
That result today that MS Dhoni & Co. fall short of guaranteeing a top-two finish at least today. DC jump to top of the table with 20 points but don't have a top-two finish guaranteed just yet
Dhawan wicket sets up a tight finish
Oh no, Dhawan had just got a reprieve thanks to DRS but then he decides to take on Shardul again later in the over and offers a catch to cover. That's a very very important wicket as Dhawan was well set on 39. Doesn't help that wickets have tumbled at the other end too. Jadeja got debutant Ripal Patel caught at long-on and then Ashwin was bowled by Shardul Thakur, the incoming delivery ricocheting onto the stumps off the back pad. Can Hetmyer take DC home?
CSK with the big wicket
Pant had hit a four and a six but that will be all from the DC captain, who falls trying to slog-sweep Jadeja. The top edge swirls up to point where Moeen Ali completes the catch. Time for Ripal Patel who comes out to a slip in place. Still run a ball for DC from here and they've Dhawan in the middle too but you never know.
… and not to a short ball. It was shortish but Iyer went for the full-blooded pull and ended up slicing it to cover. A ball later, Dhoni reviewed a catch down leg, the batsman being Pant, but it was only pad.
Shaw falls after quick start
Deepak Chahar with another wicket in the powerplay. Hits the hard length and gets Shaw miscuing his shot to midoff. Dhawan is going run-a-ball at the other end and is joined by Shreyas Iyer. What can CSK come up with here?
CSK huff and puff and finish with just 136.Rayudu was the lead orchestrator of that innings after they had a poor start with both openers dismissed within the powerplay. They wouldn't have finished with this total had it not been for Rayudu's fighting knock. Dhoni struggled at the other end in what was his slowest IPL innings. He fell for a 27-ball 18 in the final over. Rayudu, meanwhile, remained unbeaten on 55 off 43 in the end. DC have done well to keep CSK down to below 140. Join us for the chase in a bit.
OUT! Avesh Khan strikes.MSD falls for 18 and the 70-run stand is broken in the final over. CSK only have 132 on the board.
Dhoni, Rayudu lead slow and steady recovery
It's the end of the 17th over and CSK have been allowed to hit only three boundaries since Uthappa's dismissal. Pant has gone for spin from one end and pace from the other and it's worked well so far. The spin twins finish with 8-0-38-3 without conceding a boundary.
The stand is worth 42 but off 51 balls and Dhoni, batting on 17*, is yet to hit a boundary! Slow and steady but will they win this race?
Spin into the act
As if Axar's dismissal of Faf in the powerplay hadn't done enough, the left-arm spinner comes back into the attack and gets rid of Moeen Ali caught at deep midwicket. Ashwin follows up in the next over, eliciting a leading edge from Robin Uthappa who'd replaced Raina in the side today.
Ruturaj finally out to Nortje
He never looked comfortable, had a close lbw shave in the opening over but this time falls to a quick bouncer from Nortje. After not losing a wicket in the powerplay in their last four matches, CSK have now lost 2 wickets in the first 4.4 overs today!
Plenty happening, Faf out
Faf du Plessis falls to Axar Patel in the third over of powerplay, holing out to deep midwicket. Ruturaj Gaikwad could have been out too by this point in time, but the onfield lbw decision awarded to Nortje was reversed on review! This looks like a good pitch as opposed to what both captains thought at the toss, so brace yourself.
Since arriving in the UAE, Delhi Capitals have picked up their first wicket at overs 0.3, 0.6, 4.3, 1.5 and 2.4.
Avesh Khan had Faf fending a delivery in his opening over. His season has been one of improved fitness and skills and who better than Aayush Puthran to take you through it. He spoke to Chandrakant Pandit, MP's head coach, about what's changed for the fast bowler. Here's the feature.
Toss and teams
DC have won the toss and opted to bowl. Rishabh Pant isn't sure how the surface will play first up, hence the call while MS Dhoni wasn't sure about the “tacky” pitch and was considering batting first. Ripal Patel is also making his debut for DC whereas CSK bring in Bravo, Chahar, Uthappa. Raina misses out with a back injury.
DC: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w/c), Ripal Patel, Axar Patel, Shimron Hetmyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje
CSK: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood
While we wait… a CB+ offering for you! Reviews of both Moeen Ali and Chris Lewis' careers have often carried a sense of unfulfilled potential, and yet both provided the ultimate gift: reminding us why we watch and play the game. Jon Hotten with the latest Reflections column.
Happy Birthday, Rishabh Pant
The young man turns 24 today and the congratulations continue through the pre-match time too.
“Happy birthday bhai” (according to sources)
Have you read about Pant's journey to the top? Prakash Govindasreenivasan wonderfully tracked his rise in this archive feature. Good day to read this as we wait for the toss!
Remember the last time DC played CSK? It was earlier in the edition, in a different “season” altogether back in April (not that it's any less warm in India), when Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw had put up a dominating 138-run opening stand and won the match for their side. Rishabh Pant's side could be on the receiving side today, for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis are in some form. SOME FORM.
Only fair that such an exciting clash between two qualified teams also has an context: If CSK beat DC today, MS Dhoni's team are assured of a top-two finish. But if DC win, it still opens up the possibility of three teams finishing on 20 points each.
Here's the points table for you
“In what could be the precursor to the first qualifier, the two top teams of IPL 2021 are set to rake in whatever psychological advantage that can be gained from a victory when they play each other on Monday,” writes Ganesh Chandrasekaran in his succinct match preview.
