What they said:

Morgan: “Coming into the game we knew both sides were close in skill. Full credit to Kane and his team. They outplayed us today. Have represented ourselves in this tournament really well. Proud of the guys. They have given everything in this tournament. Thought we were right in the game until probably the 17th, 18th overs. We had them exactly where we wanted them up until that point.”

Williamson:“Knew it was going to be a great game of cricket. Thought they had a pretty competitive total. But just by staying in there, building the partnerships and cashing in on some moments, some matchups. Definitely something that stood out today (Mitchell's character). Has batted beautifully in a high pressure situation. T20 cricket – it's a game of small margins. Depending on the surface, the short side – these things can be match-defining. He came out and hit the ball hard, that's what he does (neesham). Changed the momentum really. Fantastic knock from Daryll, hit the big shots when it counted.”

Mitchell: “It was a bit of a whirl at the end there. I couldn't remember what was going on, but I'm happy I got the job done. It was a challenging surface, with the new ball, and it was two-paced. The way Conway set the platform and Neesh hit a few out of the ground was amazing. We knew one or two good overs would do it, and we got the momentum back thanks to Neesham's hitting. With what's going on around the world right now, it's amazing that my old man travelled half way around the world to watch me play, so this is a proud moment.”

Incredible Daryl Mitchell takes NZ to the final with an over to spare

What an innings! 72* off 47 and he was struggling for most of his innings. Neesham walked in and changed the momentum of the game in that Jordan over. And Mitchell had hung in there to use that momentum as a spring board and kick on thereafter. He hit a crucial six off Rashid in the 18th over and then began the penultimate over, from Chris Woakes, with a 2,6 and 6. It was effectively over right there. He finished it off with a four past short fine. New Zealand are ecstatic – ODI World Cup final, WTC Champions and now T20 WC finalists! What a team!

England look gobsmacked. They were ahead for about 36 overs of this game!

Game on, once more?

Chris Jordan bowls England's most expensive over of the World Cup, as Neesham takes 23 off him. There's a heart-stopped moment in there as Bairstow, at long-on, appears to have taken a blinder and lobbed it on to Livingstone nearby. But his knee has touched the advertising cushion. Boult at Lord's moment?

Neesham and Mitchell hit a six each off Rashid's 18th over but the former falls off the last ball. 20 needed off 12. Oh and by the way Mitchell has gotten to his half-century. He was struggling at the start!

Livingstone has two; NZ on the ropes

Excellent spell from Livingstone, some seriously aggressive captaincy from Morgan who has kept two overs of spin for the final five overs. The legspinner is all over New Zealand. The 16th over brings just three runs, one of them is a wide. He's a two-in-one bowler, this Livingstone. Bowls legspin to the righthanded batsmen and offspin to the lefties. He finishes with 2 for 22. NZ need 57 from 24.

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks #ENGLAND fifth bowler in T20 WC 2021 Moeen Ali: 7/77 in 14 overs (ER 5.50) Liam Livingstone: 6/86 in 15 overs (ER 5.73) #ENGvNZ 05:12 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Conway falls just as the chase was gathering steam

Livingstone bowls his third over for the cost of just five runs. More importantly, he's had Conway stumped for 46 (38). Pressure now on Mitchell, he's struggled here but at least has an idea about the wicket now. NZ need 70 from 36

ASH @TheCricketArk Liam Livingston bowls Off Breaks to LHB and Leg Breaks to RHB. Did exactly that in his 1st over. But interestingly in his 2nd over he started bowling Leg Breaks to Conway. And in his 3rd Over got him out. Feedback must have been sent after his 1st over. Matchups. 04:58 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

22 of the last two now

15 comes off Wood's third over. NZ have to go big now. Morgan gets another over out of Livingstone. NZ need 87 off 48

Just one boundary after the Powerplay

And that comes in the 10th over as Conway steps out to Livingstone and hits him over his head. Mark Wood has bowled two tight overs, hitting the pitch hard with his rapid pace. Run making has been very tough, especially for D. Mitchell, who is on 22 off 23. NZ need 109 from 60

cricketingview @cricketingview 14 runs in total in 7, 8 and 9. With no boundaries and no wickets. That's the match for ENG I'd say. 25/2 in those 3 overs would have been better than 14/0. 04:35 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

NZ in overs 7-10 this tournament:18/2 vs Pak; 39/0 vs Ind; 18/1 vs Sco; 19/1 vs Nam; 16/1 vs Afg; 22/0 vs Eng

Conway, Mitchell leading slow recovery

Still going at under a six-runs to the over. Mark Wood is introduced into the attack and asked to unleash his bullets. He gives away just 5 from his first over and Rashid follows that with an equally good over that costs four. NZ struggling to break the rut. NZ need 122 from 72

Rashid starts in the Powerplay

A boundary to start and end the 10-run over for the leggie. Before him Woakes bowled a third solid over to finish with figures of 3 for 16 after 3 overs. Upto Conway and Mitchell to rescue this situation. NZ 36/2 after 6 overs.

Chris Woakes Powerplay spells:1/12(2) vs WI; 1/9(3) vs Ban; 2/7(3) vs Aus; 0/12(1) vs SL; 0/22(3) vs SA; 2/16(3) vs NZ

Freddie Wilde @fwildecricket #ENG have taken 16 Powerplay wickets in this six matches in this World Cup – one fewer than they took in 11 matches prior to the World Cup this year and more than they took in 11 matches last year (11). They've turned a weakness into a strength. #T20WorldCup 04:26 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Two for Woakes; Williamson falls!

New Zealand's captain has been squeezed by a string of dot balls. He goes for the premeditated scoop and Adil Rashid, at short-fine, settles under the top-edged skier. Massive second wicket for Woakes.

While Woakes understandably has the headlines for now, Jordan has bowled 8 dots in his first two overs. NZ 18/2 after 4 overs.

Not sure, England are thinking this just yet, but…

Tim Wigmore @timwig England's best death bowler playing – Chris Jordan – only has two overs left, which might be something that NZ can exploit if they take this chase deep 04:13 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Chase: Guptill falls cheaply

A wicket in the first over for Chris Woakes. Ball stopped a touch on Guptill who is looking to work it to the leg-side. Leading edge goes only as far as Moeen at mid-on! NZ 13/1 after 2 overs.

This is the earliest NZ has lost their first wicket this tournament.

Moeen 51* (37) takes England to 166

20 of the final two overs and 56 from the final 5. England have a good total to defend and add another 15 because of the pressure of the knockout game. Excellent innings from Moeen! A useful cameo from Livingstone too.

Highest targets successfully chased down in T20Is in Abu Dhabi: 165 Nam vs Net 2021 163 HK vs Afg 2015 158 Aus vs WI 2021 154 Ire vs HK 2019 150 HK vs Oman 2015

Who is your pick?

Moeen tees off

Anybody would try to at this stage of the innings, but he's been smart in attacking the matchups. Launches a massive six off Sodhi to the bigger side. Then pulls Milne for a six at the start of the next over, which ends with a monstrous six by Livingstone.

Southee ends the dangerous partnership

Gets pumped for a six by Malan but has his man off the next ball, nicking a scrambled seam delivery to the keeper. Nevertheless a good innings this from the former No.1 T20I batsman. He falls for 42 off 30. His partnership with Moeen was 63 off 43. ENG 119/3 after 16 overs

Sodhi comes back…

… concedes a four with the last ball of his third over. The partnership is growing but Milne produces another six-run over. Been a top spell from the speedster so far. ENG 100/2 after 14 overs. All set then for the big launch?

The CricViz Analyst @cricvizanalyst New Zealand giving Milne a third over now is likely to exploit a positive matchup against Moeen, but it leaves them a little light at the death. It's now likely that one of Neesham, Santner or Phillips will have to bowl an over later than they would perhaps want. #T20WorldCup 03:08 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Malan pulls out his cover-drive playlist

He's hit four of them now, the last one bisecting long-off and sweeper cover. Williamson turned to the offspin of Glenn Phillips (match-ups!) but it's a move that doesn't quite work out. 11 from his first and Milne comes back. It's a decent 7-run over. England are rebuilding nicely here. ENG 85/2 after 12 overs

Ashwin 🇮🇳 @ashwinravi99 2 lefties — so bowl a keeper who can bowl a bit of off spin and bowl santner for 1 over 8 runs. Santner has never got a left hander out in his career🙈🙈 #perceptionsaboutthegame . Hope those 11 runs won't be a deciding factor🤟#matchups 03:17 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Teams batting first have scored 66, 130, 125 & 107 in the last 10 overs in night games games in Abu Dhabi since Super 12.

Buttler falls to the reverse sweep; NZ have the squeeze on

Buttler was trying to be inventive to hit Sodhi out of his lines. But he misses the reverse sweep this time and is struck in front of the stumps. Buttler falls for 29 (24) and has taken a review with him. It's a big wicket for New Zealand but it also brings together the left-handed pair of Malan and Moeen.

KW reacts to that by bringing on Neesham for Santner. The medium-pacer should have had a wicket but Devon Conway has put down a rather straightforward catch. Malan, who was on 10, hits a boundary to end the over. Eng 67/2 after 10 overs.

Spin is in

And given how accurate Sodhi and Santner can be, there are no easy runs. It forces Buttler to pull out the reverse sweep to get the four. Just 13 from these two overs. Eng 53/1 after 8 overs.

Bairstow falls in the PowerPlay

Milne strikes with his first ball, but he has his captain to thank for this wicket. KW moves quickly and dives low to pick up this offering from Bairstow. 40/1 after 6 overs

First signs of England getting a move on…

… There may have been some nerves after Southee sent down a 1-run over in the third. It's followed by Buttler taking two boundaries off Boult before a rattled bowler bowled a bouncer that sailed over four 4+wd. There's also an extra run conceded off an overthrow. 29/0 after 4 overs

Steady start after 2 overs.

12/0 for England with a boundary off the last ball in each of Southee and Boult's first overs. Early punches here. There is some swing for the Kiwi pacers.

Tim Southee to start. Bairstow joins Buttler at the top. It's a JB+JB combo. Are you ready, screams the stadium DJ!Are you?

Toss: KW calls right, New Zealand will chase

Eoin Morgan hopes the toss will not have a big bearing on the outcome of this game. England bring in Billings for Roy. New Zealand are unchanged.

England (Playing XI): Jos Buttler(w), Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan(c), Sam Billings, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

New Zealand (Playing XI): Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson(c), Devon Conway(w), Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult

Freddie Wilde @fwildecricket Massive toss for #NZ to win—especially given #ENG batting-heavy selection. England will need to get through eight spin overs & at least one of Woakes at the death. With the dew around that could be a challenge. #T20WorldCup 01:39 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Pat Alert!

Simon Burnton @Simon_Burnton Sam Billings getting the back-slaps after England's pre-match huddle, looks like he's got the nod to replace Jason Roy for the #T20WorldCup semi-final 01:13 PM&nbsp&#149 Nov 11, 2021

Pre-match reading

Have to start with this gem of a piece on Captain Morgan, from Rob Johnston. It's a proper deconstruction of this uber-successful white-ball captain, his methods, mindset and more.

Jason Roy may not be playing this game, but Kane Williamson remains wary of the depth that England are blessed with.

Last but not the least, the preview should get you up to speed about the two teams and their contrasting styles. In case you need to know: England 3-2 New Zealand in T20 WCs.

These two sides also met in the semifinal of the last T20 WC (in 2016).Remember who slammed 78 off 44 at the Kotla that night?

We hope the match doesn't make you yawn

First question coming along is an interesting one…

What happens if the Super Over is a tie? They'll play another Super Over!

Prelude – England vs New Zealand, Semifinal

We've reached this stage pretty swiftly enough, or am I the only one that feels that this tournament has zoomed by quickly? England, under Eoin Morgan, are in another World Cup knockout game. It's not even a surprise. Nor is it a surprise to see New Zealand here.

Neutrals will surely not begrudge New Zealand their place in today's semi-final though, particularly those who like to see bowlers get their moments in the sun in this bat-heavy game. Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner have tied down big line-ups here. Kane Williamson has shown once more that even in a format like the T20, brain can pip brawn.

Now he finds himself in another blink-first contest against Morgan. We all know what happened the last time these two played in a similar game. You know which. Will this game match that one?
