New Zealand win!

No surprises there. India lose with 33 balls to spare, their joint second worst loss in T20Is. It was always a tall climb from 110/7 and so it proved, with Kane Williamson taking his side home with a 33* in the 15th over. Daryl Mitchell chipped in with 49 at the top as New Zealand flew away in a small chase, giving their NRR a major boost.

Arunkumar S @sr10243 @prat1204 Openers are playing in a defensive mindset. No intent from the start of the innings from team INDIA caused the defeat. 05:00 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

India vs NZ in ICC events since 2007

Guptill goes but…

… yes, exactly what you thought. That New Zealand are away and on course in this small run chase. Varun Chankravarthy took the new ball, Bumrah did it from the other end and the duo didn't conceded a boundary in the first two overs. But Guptill broke the shackles with a couple of boundaries in Varun's second over before falling to Bumrah in the next. Despite all that, NZ finished the powerplay at 44/1.

India kept to 110/7

This is their second lowest total in the T20 WCs, and it's thanks to a formidable bowling effort from New Zealand on a slow, two-paced Dubai pitch. It all started with India only managing 6 runs in the first two overs before Ishan fell to Boult. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma followed, holing out similarly to one of the deep fielders. Kohli played the anchor role for 17 balls, scoring only 9 runs before he fell too. India didn't hit a boundary between overs 7-15 and that should tell you all you need to know.

Ahmad Danish @TheAhmadDanish #INDvsNZ And again… Our batsman failed to score. Now onus on the bowlers. Fingers crossed… @prat1204 03:48 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Dhruv Thakkar @Dhruvt_official @prat1204 International T20 series before world cup would have given more practice as a team instead of IPL. #Cricbuzz #NZvsIND #t20worldcup2021 03:36 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Lowest totals successfully defended by India (T20Is):

Hardik Pandya gone..

..but not before he hits India's first boundary since the powerplay, in the 17th over. Shardul Thakur falls in the same Trent Boult over as Hardik, both batsmen skying up variations from the crafty left-armer.

The reactions are flowing in, so here are a few more…

Kiran Udaykumar @ripperkiran @prat1204 Such has been the disarray that I am just thinking of Pujara at No.3, seriously I have lost it! 03:32 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Ahmad Danish @TheAhmadDanish @prat1204 This is brain fade batting from India. No boundaries in the last 10 overs. #INDvsNZ @cricbuzz 03:19 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Jigar tailor @JJJKING_26 Hopefully test match continues in 2nd innings too #INDvsNZ @prat1204 03:24 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Hari Krishnan R @imHarikrishnanR @prat1204 Not my opinion, But one of my friend just quoting: How simple has India becoming when they loss the toss! #INDvsNZ 03:24 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

India going nowhere in Dubai

No boundaries were hit between overs 7-15. Read that again? Yeah, we too. Unfortunately it's true. And that's the first time it's happened in this World Cup. India are stuck; they attack and lose wickets, and when they don't, well they let New Zealand just bowl the way they want. It's been a very difficult match for India so far and this innings will sting a side that swears by intent. The bowlers need some magic to get them back in this.

Good time to read this from Deepu Narayanan: Do India's batters have a spin problem?

Some reactions from you guys

Kiran Udaykumar @ripperkiran @prat1204 All Indian batsmen have looked out of sorts. Haven't seen that in a while. 03:04 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Anany Shrivastava @ananyas319 This match is turning out to be like a relationship which u just want to shutdown but u simply can't.. thinking there is still some hope 💔💔#INDvsNZ @prat1204 03:00 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Masterboy @Master35639 @prat1204 Is there any hope of qualify if we lose this? Or we have to switch off our TV for whole tournament? 02:57 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Kohli's wicket pulls India down further

The India captain was probably trying to do the right thing: play the anchor, let Rishabh Pant do his thing from the other end, and try to take this deep. But then has a sudden rush of blood, goes after an Ish Sodhi legbreak with a slog-sweep and holes out. What that innings of 9 off 17 has done is pushed India deeper into the mire.

Is the pitch unplayable? Nah. Have India set themselves an impossible target and are losing wickets trying to attack everything? Probably. What's the way out? You tell me.

Now it's Rohit Sharma holing out

I wish these quick updates on the blog was down to me but India are losing them thick and fast, and I'm having to come back before you know. First Ishan Kishan, then KL Rahul and now Rohit Sharma — all trying to clear the big ropes in Dubai and holing out to fielders in the deep. It's Ish Sodhi striking for New Zealand this time. Not a great ball though. Short and wide but it does the job for Kane Williamson.

KL Rahul falls too

Another stuttering start for India this. KL Rahul hasn't quite looked like the KL Rahul of the IPL and warm-ups, and perishes this time trying to take the short ball on. India finish the powerplay ay 35/2 as a result and will need a big few overs in the middle to put up a fighting total on the board.

Down to Rohit and Kohli now…

Deepu Narayanan @deeputalks Rohit & Kohli both have been relatively slow scorers in the middle overs against spinners that turn the ball away. Santner & Sodhi both have a great T20I record against India. Should be an interesting battle ahead. #INDvsNZ 02:32 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Early wicket falls for India

The Ishan Kishan experiment at the top doesn't quite work. He falls to his MI teammate Trent Boult, picking the only fielder in the deep with a legstump half volley. There's more drama next ball. Rohit Sharma is dropped by Adam Milne at fine leg… How costly will this be for New Zealand?

Anany Shrivastava @ananyas319 Rohit need to do what he once used to do for Mumbai Indians in middle order. @prat1204 #INDvsNZ 02:14 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021

Toss and teams

It's India batting first (but somehow that's not a fun thing to do in the UAE, is it). Virat Kohli announces two changes: one “forced” with Ishan Kishan coming in for the injured Suryakumar Yadav while the other change is unforced… Shardul Thakur comes in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Also, Kohli confirms that Ishan will open the innings.

New Zealand bring in Adam Milne in the place of Tim Seifert for a better “balance” to the bowling attack. Devon Conway will take the gloves.

India: Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson(c), James Neesham, Devon Conway(w), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Trent Boult

Building up…

What difference can a week make? Well, we will know in a bit, starting with the decisions at the toss. Will we see Ishan Kishan in the XI? Will Bhuvneshwar Kumar make way for someone else? Will Hardik Pandya finally bowl? Prakash Govindasreenivasan tries to tackle those questions in our match preview.

New Zealand are also coming off a loss to the same opposition, Pakistan, who are looking favourites alongside England. What changes will New Zealand make for this game, if at all? Both Gary Stead and Kane Williamson have spoken a lot about flexibility and taking the opposition by surprise, so what do we have in store this time? They had Daryl Mitchell as an opener alongside Martin Guptill last time around but the batting didn't quite go to plan then.

Freddie Wilde @fwildecricket Hardik & Shardul are marking their run ups for #IND. No sign of Bhuvi doing the same. #T20WorldCup 01:03 PM&nbsp&#149 Oct 10, 2021
