Dhoni's takes gives CSK a ‘Q' next to their name

… And CSK sail into the Playoffs once again, proving 2020 was only an aberration. They took it deep like they do most times when Dhoni is around and eventually finished it off even if it got too close for comfort right at the end.

Meanwhile, SRH who made every Playoffs between 2016-2020, are the first team to be knocked out of IPL 2021. A season to forget for them.

24th time MS Dhoni has remained unbeaten in a successful run chase – joint most in IPL along side Ravindra Jadeja

Harsha Bhogle @bhogleharsha Dhoni and a six to finish. The story isn't over yet….. 05:32 PM&nbsp&#149 Sep 09, 2021

16 to win from 12

Scoring 8 an over is not that easy and Dhoni, who hasn't batted much, has played a couple of dot balls. It could have been about 19 to chase had it not been for a timely boundary from Rayudu. Can Bhuvneshwar give Kaul at least 10 to defend in the final over?

… Nope… A six from Rayudu and a four from Dhoni makes it 3 from 6!

Holder has 3… Is there hope in this game

He gets Raina and du Plessis in one over. The former falls to the sucker full ball after being made to camp deep in his crease expecting the short ball. du Plessis looks to pull a ball and mistimes it horribly. CSK need 26 off 24!

3 for 27 for Holder. Both he and Rashid have bowled out. Up to Bhuvneshwar now to continue the magic

A wicket for Rashid

Moeen Ali plays on to a delivery skidding on to him. 30 to win off 30!

Sense of a foregone conclusion to this one

Req. Rate is 5.33 with six overs to go.

Holder strikes to get Gaikwad

The CSK opener dances down the crease again but can't get into good position to clear mid-off with his lofted shot. Holder's extra bounce also plays a part in the miscue. 75/1. 45 off 38 for Gaikwad. Another quality innings. Moeen Ali is in at No.3

Last three opening stands bw Faf & Ruturaj: 71, 74 & 75

Untroubled CSK's openers

75/0 in the 10 overs and Gaikwad has once more taken on the style after the PowerPlay with his footwork against spin.

Jigar Mehta @jigsactin Six 50-plus stands in 11 innings. This Ruturaj Gaikwad-Faf du Plessis opening pair has gone a bit under the radar. So crucial to the success they've had this season. #SRHvCSK 04:29 PM&nbsp&#149 Sep 09, 2021

47/0 in the PowerPlay

CSK are on their way. Du Plessis uses his crease expertly to put Holder off his lengths and scores two boundaries. Ruturaj does the same against Rashid. He also overturns an LBW decision against him. Just about the perfect start to this chase from these two CSK openers.

CSK press down the accelerator in the fourth over

A six each for Gaikwad and du Plessis, both over wide long-on, in a 15-run over from Bhuvneshwar and that takes CSK to 27/0 after 4 overs.

Sedate start

SRH out to make CSK every single run. It's a good start from Sandeep Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar who've bowled dead straight and left the difficult wicket do the rest. Just 7 from the first 2 overs for CSK's openers.

SRH finish with 134/7

A 17 right at the end from Rashid Khan. He could have helped himself with the ball with that knock. I reckon it's about six short of what would have been a challenging score. But CSK with that deep batting line-up of theirs may just be well placed to chase this down.

Samad, Abhishek can't kick on

Both make brisk (in the context of the rest of the innings) 18s before falling in the same Hazlewood over. Abhishek hits a delightful six over extra cover before chipping a catch to long-on. Samad then can't beat backward point off a full and wide ball. Will this cost SRH about 10-15 runs?

A mini productive period for SRH

Overs 14 and 15 have brought 21 runs in total for SRH as their two young batsmen look to push the score forward. Samad hit a lovely straight six off Hazlewood and Abhishek Sharma hit a pair of boundaries off Thakur.

Joy Bhattacharjya @joybhattacharj Abdul Samad will go for quite a bit in this next IPL auction. 03:07 PM&nbsp&#149 Sep 09, 2021

A second for Bravo as Garg falls

Again it's the surprise quick ball from Bravo that gets him the wicket. Bangs it in short and catches Garg by surprise. He top-edges a pull and Dhoni settles under it. Abhishek Sharma in at No.5, SRH finally have a L-R pair. Can they up the ante and target 140?

Saha falls in the very next over, after a hard working 44 off 46. It's a tough pitch but he missed out on quite a few full-tosses. Tries to pull Jadeja, gets a top-edge and Dhoni settles under another catch.

Kausthub Gudipati @kaustats MS Dhoni is the first ever player to claim 100 catches for a team in IPL. Closest players to him are Suresh Raina (98 for CSK) and Kieron Pollard (94 for MI). #IPL2021 #SRHvCSK 03:57 PM&nbsp&#149 Sep 09, 2021

Bravo strikes to remove Williamson

This one's the quicker from Dwayne Bravo and it's full and straight, beats Williamson's defence and strikes him in front. Plumb.

CSK should have had another wicket, that of Saha, who has slowed down after that good early start. But Shardul Thakur has overstepped and the catch at backward point won't count. Can Saha make his former team pay? 57/2 after 9 overs.

PowerPlay: SRH 41/1

Not too bad on this wicket after losing Jason Roy. Saha has moved on to 24 off 20. Deepak Chahar won't be too happy with his effort so far. 24 from his 3 overs which included a change of bowling ends.

Statbuzz: Deepak Chahar has gone wicketless in Powerplay in eight of the 11 innings in IPL 2021. But in the three other games he has picked nine wickets – the most by any bowler in this phase this season.

Saha gets going; Roy falls

Saha hits two sixes off Deepak Chahar, a pull and a lofted off-drive, but Hazlewood produces a near-perfect follow-up over and has Jason Roy caught behind. Hazlewood also squares up new man Kane Williamson with an edge flying between the ‘keeper and the wide first slip.

The CricViz Analyst @cricvizanalyst Jason Roy has been dismissed 6 times in 93 balls from Josh Hazlewood across all formats, at an average of just 10.33. #IPL2021 #SRHvCSK 02:17 PM&nbsp&#149 Sep 09, 2021

First Impressions: No bounce on the wicket

Not much pace either. Wicket to wicket stuff will prove to be difficult to hit through the line. It'll only get progressively worse, so will have to maximise the PowerPlay. SRH have only 5 from the first two overs.

Toss: Bravo back; CSK bowl

Dhoni too believes this pitch may play slightly better and he calls right and opts to bowl. One change for the three-time champs: Dwayne Bravo comes in for Sam Curran. The West Indian was excellent in CSK's other match here, against RCB.

SRH are unchanged.

Pitch: Slight better, reckons Matthew Hayden

He's also spotted a return of the Sharjah sheen on that pitch. The heavy roller has been doing overtime apparently. Let's not get too carried away though. Average first innings score this season has been 136. Toss coming up!

Pre-match reading

While we wait for the toss, which is about 30 minutes away, why don't you get into the buzz of the game by catching up on Narbavie's preview. He reminds us of the H2H battle between MS Dhoni and Rashid Khan.

MS Dhoni has a strike rate less than 100 against Rashid Khan so the CSK skipper will have to find a way to rotate the strike frequently if those two face off

While you're snacking on IPL content… did you see what R. Ashwin had to say about the furore around the overthrow incident with Eoin Morgan. Can't miss that.

Prelude – SRH vs CSK

A proper David v Goliath battle if there ever was one this season. How things change in a year. This time last year, SRH were going for their fifth straight season in the playoffs while CSK were preparing for their first season out of it. Now CSK are back to where we're accustomed to seeing them while SRH have endured a miserable campaign. There remains, however, just a glimmer of hope for Kane Williamson's team; they can qualify for the playoffs by winning all three games and getting some favours along the way from those above them. MS Dhoni's side can seal their qualification with a win today.

Speaking of changes in the last year, how much has this Sharjah track changed since being re-laid. This time last year we would have been bracing for a 200-v-200 contest. 130 could be a good score today, one guesses. But let's see.
