Major investments announced as a North Carolina ground finds itself in line to host 2024 T20 WC.
Church Street Park cricket ground in Morrisville, NC will undergo a major revamp in a bid to stage high-profile cricket matches. The city council and American Cricket Enterprises (owners of Major League Cricket USA) have come to an agreement to venture into a public-private partnership to make further capital investments to the ground to host MLC and international cricket matches. The announcement from ACE comes on the back of a previous announcement last month wherein they entered into an exclusive negotiation agreement to construct a cricket stadium in the heart of the Silicon Valley in California, setting the ball rolling to finalize the World Cup venues.
The revamp of the ground will entail the installation of top-notch TV broadcast facilities, improvements to the existing LED lighting, erecting bleachers for initial permanent seating capacity to be 2000, construction of additional practice facilities and parking. According to the agreement, the overall project is expected to cost $3.75 million with the city council netting 20% of the net revenues accrued from the new facility.
Church Street Park cricket ground, which hosted the finals weekend of the 2021 Minor league Cricket, opened its doors in 2015 as one of the handful cricket grounds in the country to boast of a turf wicket and artificial lighting. The city is home to a very vibrant South Asian cricket-loving community and is renowned to gather the highest crowds for USA games.
While international cricket is passionately followed by people with subcontinental or commonwealth roots in the USA, an overwhelming majority of them have criminally turned a blind eye towards the national team fixtures and affairs. But the Morrisville cricketing community has time and again stood by the idea of USA cricket and its cricketers. There have been instances where the volunteers have waited with bated breath at the airport to receive the USA national team players, which is totally unheard of anywhere outside the subcontinent for the most part. Getting the World Cup to Morrisville will be a crowning jewel for many of the hundreds of cricket volunteers of the city.
“Major League Cricket is delighted to be able to make a significant investment to further enhance Church Street Park and establish the venue as an outstanding professional cricket stadium and high-performance center,” said Vijay Srinivasan, co-founder, Major League Cricket.
“We look forward to our town hosting world-class cricket that will bring thousands of visitors to the region each year and put Morrisville firmly on the map as one of the premier professional cricket venues in America” added Morrisville mayor TJ Cawley.
