Mahmudullah wasn't keen to talk about Bangladesh's abject campaign at the T20 WC.
Bangladesh T20 skipper Mahmudullah suggested on Thursday (November 18) that he was not aware of Mushfiqur Rahim's exclusion from the three-match T20I series against Pakistan. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided to rest Mushfiqur for the T20I series against Pakistan terming it as “rest” considering they were focusing on the four Tests slated for after the T20Is – two Tests against Pakistan at home followed by a two-Test series on the New Zealand tour, as part of the second cycle of ICC World Test Championship.
Mushfiqur urged selectors and the team management to call a spade a spade as he felt he was droppedfollowing his lean patch in the shorter format in the recent past. Mahmudullah put a new twist in the tale ahead of the three T20Is against Pakistan, urging the media to ask the team management regarding the exclusion, which came as a surprise considering Mahmudullah is supposed to be a part of the team management as the team's captain.
“If you ask the team management it will be better,” Mahmudullah said after his attention was drawn to Mushfiqur's exclusion. “I am not sure what Mushfiqur said and can only say something after seeing it. This decision (excluding Mushfiqur from T20) is entirely of the team management and I am not ready to say anything in this regard, but all I can say is that we will miss Mushfiqur (in the series),” he said.
Mahmudullah also shed light on his position in the team both as a cricketer and as a leader following the debacle in the T20 WC.
“It is totally the team management or board's decision (as far as captaincy is concerned). I am not too worried about it. I will continue if they think I am good enough,” said Mahmudullah. “If I have to say about my position (as the captain) then I will have to say a lot of things and I don't want to say it here.
“I think it's best not to comment (about his career). If I am fit, I can play for a few more years. I haven't thought about these things. I have to overcome the pressure and challenges. It is the same for experienced players or the new ones. I think it is best to focus on trying to perform rather than focus on these things (all the talks going around),” he said.
Mahmudullah also said that he is not too keen to talk about Bangladesh's abject campaign at the T20 WC as he feels it will have a negative impact. He added that he is confident they can give Pakistan a good run for their money with this new-look side.
“I don't want to talk about the World Cup. If we keep talking about what has happened, it might create a negative effect. I am really focused on the T20 match (tomorrow), how I can contribute as an individual player and make sure everyone else contributes too. We are taking everything positively. Definitely, Pakistan is a major T20 side, which makes it a challenge for us.
“There will be challenges with a young team, especially against Pakistan. But I believe that T20 is the type of format where you can expect something good from your best line-up on a good wicket. I know that we couldn't fulfill our expectations in the World Cup. For us, starting well is very important. We need to keep up after picking the momentum,” he said.
