Ibrahim Khaleel, who plays cricket for the United States of America, has a tale that is more common these days, but no less thrilling. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman made his first-class debut in 2002 - in India.

After going through the grind of first-class cricket in Hyderabad, he competed in the boycotted Indian Cricket League in 2007, and was banned from playing competitive cricket as a result. In 2009, he was approved to play cricket again and returned to play for Hyderabad. He made headlines when he was picked up 14 catches (over 2 innings) in a match for Hyderabad against Assam, setting a world record for any first-class game.

He was also quite a gritty batsman in first-class cricket, scoring consecutive hundreds in first-class cricket in 2005, before returning to first-class cricket after the ICL fiasco and scoring another against Jharkhand in 2010.

Nevertheless, in the Dhoni era, it was always going to be difficult to make it into the national side; so Khaleel took the first opportunity that came knocking. He was called for trials for the USA team selection for the World Cricket League Division 3, and impressed with his performances. He went on to play club cricket in the states, away from the competition in India, and scored heavily, also showing tactical nous and experience that elevated him, eventually, to the USA captain’s post.

His future looks brighter than it would have in India, as Khaleel has been signed by the Montreal Tigers for the 2018 Global T20 league in Canada, the CPL 2018 edition (St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots) and is set to lead USA in the 2018/19 T20 WC qualifiers.
