Zaman hit another half-century as Lahore put up a huge total on the board.
Fakhar Zaman's scintillating start to the 2022 edition of the Pakistan Super League continued as his quickfire fifty helped Lahore Qalandars pick up a comfortable 29-run win over Peshawar Zalmi. Having already scored 76 and 106 in the opening two games, Zaman hit another half-century on Wednesday (February 2) as Lahore put up a huge total on the board.
He found able support in the top of the order from Abdullah Shafique as the duo put on 94 for the opening wicket inside the first ten overs. A high-flying Shafique was then dismissed for 41 and Peshawar did go through a promising little period where they halted Zaman's march towards another century. But his dismissal only added to their woes as veteran Mohammad Hafeez took on the bowling attack.
Hafeez finished unbeaten on 37 and Lahore managed to edge closer to 200 as a result of a mini cameo from Rashid Khan, who cleared the ropes thrice within a span of eight deliveries. To make matters worse for Peshawar, Shaheen Afridi led from the front by delivering an inch-perfect yorker to send Hazratullah Zazai packing for a three-ball duck in the very first over.
Senior wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal paved the way for a fightback from Peshawar but at the other end, Hussain Talat endured a torrid time as he consumed 24 balls for his 15 in a 200 run chase. Zaman Khan ended Talat's nightmare and also got rid of a rampaging Akmal off successive deliveries forcing Peshawar on the backfoot.
Haider Ali looked impressive in the middle but Shoaib Malik stuttered his way to a 9-ball 7 at the other end to pretty much signal the end of Peshawar's fight. Sherfane Rutherford tried to threaten for a moment but his wicket caused a massive landslide at the death for the batting unit. As many as four catches were dropped during the run chase but it didn't have an effect on the final result as David Wiese made up for his first-ball duck by mopping up the tail and give Lahore their second win.
Brief scores: Lahore Qalandars 199/4 in 20 overs (Fakhar Zaman 66, Abdullah Shafique 41; Salman Irshad 2-47) beat Peshawar Zalmi 170/9 in 20 overs (Haider Ali 49, Kamran Akmal 41; Zaman Khan 3-32, David Wiese 2-11) by 29 runs
