The Mumbai team for the upcoming Ranji season will be captained by Prithvi Shaw with Ajikya Rahane, the former India vice-captain, part of it as a member. The Salil Ankola-led selection committee is expected to announce the squad in a couple of days.
Cricbuzz understands the decision to retain Shaw (22) as the team captain was taken collectively by the selection panel, coach Amol Muzumdar and the association, in consultation with Rahane, who has a notable record as the stand-in captain of the Indian team.
Rahane, who had been a long-standing deputy to Virat Kohli until recently, has captained India in six Tests, including in Australia in 2020 when he inspired a depleted Indian side to a dramatic series-win against a star-studded home team. Additionally, Rahane has led India in three ODIs as well. For the record, Rahane has played 82 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 Twenty20 Internationals.
“Captaincy is not important for someone like Ajinkya, who has achieved what was considered to be impossible for a cricket captain,” said an MCA official. “He has agreed to play as well as mentor the side and help restore the Mumbai glory in domestic cricket. He has no ego issues over captaincy and has no problem with Shaw as the skipper.”
The MCA official further explained that the decision to stick with Shaw was also in view of the fact that the selectors had no knowledge of Rahane's availability when the squad was first selected in December. Rahane, at that time, was in South Africa while the tournament was due to start on January 13 but eventually postponed due to a spike in COVID-19 cases across the country. Now that Rahane is available, the think tank of Mumbai cricket subsequently consulted all concerned and decided it would be in the best interest of the side to stick with Shaw, who had won a tournament (Vijay Hazare in 2021) as Mumbai captain.
Rahane could be the lone inclusion to the squad that was previously announced. Shivam Dube, who could have missed a few games if the Ranji Trophy had taken place as per the original schedule after testing COVID-positive, will return to the side.
The 41-time Ranji champions are clubbed with defending champions Saurashtra, Odisha and Goa in Group D. They will play their three league games in Ahmedabad. The team has been asked to report at the venue by February 9. The schedule is not known as the BCCI has not yet shared it with the associations.
