Boland bagged a five-for on the final day
Scott Boland picked up an impressive five-wicket haul on the final day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as Victoria beat New South Wales by 174 runs in their Sheffield Shield encounter. NSW opener Daniel Hughes came up with a monumental effort by carrying his bat through but didn't find enough support from the other end to force a draw.
Resuming at 61/3 in a tall chase of 422, NSW were given massive hope by the overnight pair of Hughes and Jack Edwards. The pair batted out 36 overs on the final morning to entertain hopes of pulling off a draw before Boland finally brought an end to the frustrating stand. Edwards was castled for 42 and his dismissal put NSW on the backfoot once again with Boland striking again in his following over.
With half the side back in the pavilion, it was always going to be a herculean task for NSW to salvage a favourable result. However, Hughes continued to defy the odds and was patient enough. The likes of Sean Abbott and Peter Nevill did hang in for a while but their resistance wasn't enough.
When Liam Hatcher batted out more than 15 overs for the ninth wicket alongside Hughes, NSW's hopes were on the ascendancy again before Boland dealt the crucial blow. He trapped Hatcher leg-before-wicket for his fourth wicket and completed the five-fer in his following over by dismissing the injured Trent Copeland as well to bowl his side to a win. Hughes was stranded at the other end on 89 off 319 deliveries.
Brief scores: Victoria 313/9d (Nic Maddinson 128; Liam Hatcher 4-86) & 248/5d (Matthew Short 90; Jack Edwards 3-47) beat New South Wales 140 (Daniel Hughes 59; Scott Boland 3-33) & 247 (Daniel Hughes 89; Scott Boland 5-56) by 174 runs
