The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel had to face backlash after dropping Hanuma Vihari from the India squad for the Test series against New Zealand
India's squad for the Test series against New Zealand was announced without any clarity from the BCCI with regards to selection calls on who was dropped or rested. As reported earlier by Cricbuzz, a few players had requested to be rested while the workloads of a few others had to be managed leading to them being rested. The case of Hanuma Vihari though doesn't seem to be falling under this category.
The backlash after he was dropped from the Test team has been severe leading to his sudden inclusion in the A squad, the decision appearing as an afterthought.
Those privy to the selection meeting, that talked to Cricbuzz, claim that Vihari was given an explanation by Chetan Sharma as to why he was left out for the two Tests against New Zealand. “Sending him to South Africa is to make sure he is match ready when India reach South Africa for the three-Test series,” said a source in direct knowledge of this selection process. Vihari is also claimed to be an “automatic choice” in the eleven even as there is a move to widen the group of red ball players, and the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the Test squad is a point in that direction.
Post the T20I series against New Zealand, a few more players are set to be sent to South Africa to reinforce the A squad. If one is to believe the insiders, special care is being taken about Umran Malik, the fast bowler who sparkled in the IPL and was subsequently taken as a net bowler by the Indian team in the World Cup. “Umran's will be rightly utilised, he is a rare talent,” it is being emphasised.
Varun Chakravarthy, who has also been dropped for the T20I series, is battling a few fitness issues, Cricbuzz is given to understand.
While the new selection panel led by Chetan Sharma continues to battle with key decisions such as these, there is also the biggest of them all – the ODI captaincy. Cricbuzz understands that there is a bit of reluctance to discuss it yet.
Neither call has been made on whether Virat Kohli will continue with it or if Rohit Sharma will take over. The discussions are set to go on during the T20I series and is likely to involve a lot of inputs from Rahul Dravid as well.
