Lahore Qalandars stunned Islamabad United to sneak home with an 8-run win in Karachi to climb to second spot on the table. United were in the driver's seat with 39 runs needed from the last five overs with 8 wickets in hand – until they lost the plot as Qalandar's bowlers did a tremendous job on Saturday (February 5) to take their side over the line as Shadab's all-round effort went in vain.
Comfortably placed despite being rattled early on with openers falling cheaply, United revived themselves with Colin Munro and skipper Shadab Khan's fifty with a century stand. But once Shadab holed out for 52, Munro followed in the next over for 60 and the pressure got to Azam Khan and Asif Ali, who couldn't find the boundaries. The equation came down to 12 runs needed in the final over, but Zaman Khan held his nerve, used the variations to good effect and conceded only three.
Waqas Maqsood and skipper Shadab Khan returned four-wicket hauls earlier, but couldn't stop the Qalandars from putting on a strong 174 on the board after opting to bowl. Openers Fakhar Zaman (38) and Abdullah Shafique (44) gave the Lahore side a strong start with an 83-run stand after which, quick strikes had reduced them to 98/5 in no time. Harry Brook (37) and David Wiese (20) added crucial runs to revive the innings as the Qalandars finished with a total which was just enough in the end.
Brief scores: Lahore Qalandars 174/9 in 20 overs (Fakhar Zaman 38, Abdullah Shafique 44, Harry Brook 37; Waqas Maqsood 4-35, Shadab Khan 4-20) beat Islamabad United 166/5 in 20 overs (Colin Munro 60, Shadab Khan 52; Haris Rauf 2-41) by 8 runs
