The second Sheffield Shield clash of the 2021-22 season featuring Queensland and Tasmania has been called off just moments before it was scheduled to begin on Tuesday (September 28). The decision to postpone the game was taken after four new Covid-19 positive cases emerged in Queensland.
Initially, Queensland Cricket did state that the game could begin the following day subject to public health conditions but Cricket Australia later confirmed that the clash will be played later. The two teams are also scheduled to face each other in a One-Day Cup fixture on Sunday (October 3) and at the moment, it isn't clear if the fixture would go ahead.
“The (Shield) match will be rescheduled to a new date later in the season, following the Tasmanian team's decision to fly home today,” CA said in a statement. “Further updates regarding the scheduled Marsh One-Day Cup match between the two sides, due to be played this Sunday, October 3, will be provided in due course.”
Cricket Tasmania later confirmed that the game could have still taken place despite the new cases but they adopted a safety-first approach. “Cricket Tasmania has made the decision to return their Tasmanian Tigers Marsh Sheffield Shield and One-Day squads to Tasmania today,” they said in a statement.
“This is not a decision that was taken lightly. While the situation in Queensland hasn't prevented the match from commencing today, a cautious and considered approach is being taken and it is our strong opinion that we are better having our players and staff home as we build a better understanding of the current landscape. We look forward to playing the Queensland Bulls at the first opportunity.”
