The Sheffield Shield fixture between New South Wales and Victoria – scheduled to begin on Friday at the SCG, has been postponed after Will Sutherland – the Victoria cricketer – returned what is suspected to be a positive Covid-19 test result.

An official Cricket Australia statement said: “In the course of routine COVID-19 testing, Will Sutherland has returned a test result which requires further analysis. The Victorian team is currently self-isolating while this analysis and investigation takes place.”

Earlier in September, a Shield game between Queensland and Tasmania had to be called off after four positive cases emerged in Queensland. Following this development, the Tasmanian team decided to fly home to avoid being stuck behind a closed state border, the precaution that was being taken when the cases began to spike in Australia.

“This is not a decision that was taken lightly. While the situation in Queensland hasn't prevented the match from commencing today, a cautious and considered approach is being taken and it is our strong opinion that we are better having our players and staff home as we build a better understanding of the current landscape. We look forward to playing the Queensland Bulls at the first opportunity,” Tasmania had said in a statement.
